How do you get an EXP chain?

I seem to get EXP chains randomly. Does anyone have the method to the madness? Please let me know.

By killing a mob that cons Even Match or higher within a certain time limit. The time limit gets shorter the higher you chain, but at high levels of the game, the mob difficulty can allow for nearly endless chains in a great party under optimal conditions.

To get an EXP Chain, you need to kill two monsters, Even Match or higher, within a time frame determined by your level and party size. Getting an EXP Chain increases the experience gain from the second kill. Killing further EM or tougher enemies within an increasingly shortening time frame increases the bonus XP and continues the chain, though the bonus does not increase beyond EXP Chain 5 (+50% XP). Once you're at Chain 5, the time between kills allowed to continue the chain does not decrease. Chaining is the foundation of XP partying in FFXI.
