Its the past for sure. Some of the people who were at the show said it was a time travel based expansion right from the show floor. How people get there is a different matter.
All the places they have shown have clearly represented what was there pre-crystal war according to game lore. Sarutabaruta with elegant fields instead of drained fertility thanks to the towers of horotoro, Davoi back to its old former glory including lots of cabins and the church is complete. Gustaberg is filled with walls and watch towers to signal enemies on the horizon. Batalia downs has regiments and walls to hold off all sea based attacks. Saurumongue campaign is completely protected and filled with walls as depected in lore till a great disaster lead it to being destroyed.
Till the crystal war happened the three nations were actually incredibly hostile towards each other and the regulation of conquest actually had boarders, which explains the gates people see. After the Crystal-war they tore them down (or they were destroyed...)
Also the Q&A from yesturday revealed that new spells would be added for the expansion. How that is to happen will be seen later obviously. Id post the URL >_> but I dont seem to have enough permission to post URL's....
Or maybe we just get to play the role of one of the soldiers and reenact the events of the war without actually changing anything. That'd be pretty cool.
To all the people who say time travel is stupid: We don't even know if it really is time travel, for all we know it could be memories projected into reality or something.

Sorry for the double post, but this guy posted while I was posting, and he brought up a point that made me .
For all we know it could be something kinda like the Emptiness; a strange phenomena that causes a bend in the space-time continum or maybe infiltrates and projects different peoples (or Altana's, even) memories..
This quote caught my eye, because one thing that I noticed in the video is how they were in one zone, then an effect that looks like a Glitch (possibly in time) to merge it into an area that vastly contrasts it.
Maybe these glitches are representative of something, like how the present is falling apart because something's happening to the Past a la "Time Squad," and if you read the whole narrative on the ink of your destiny, it kind of makes sense.
And/or, something could be wrong with Altana herself and you have to "pick up the quill" of the entire world to "write" things back to normality. It could be that you end up becoming something of an Altana yourself, a la "8-Bit Theatre."
