  • PS2 controller for PC version

There are many PS2 to PC USB adapters for sale from various places.
One I personally use it made by Boom, (search amazon "PC USB Converter for Playstation 1 2 & Nintendo 64 Joypads" to view).

The PS2 controller in PC can be used like the PS2 version of the game, with fluent movement or camera controlls that I personally find easier via the analog sticks rahter than the mouse and keyboard.
I am used to PS2 controls for ff games so I prefer it rather than learning all the keys again and adapting.
The keyboard and mouse controls can be used simultaniously as usual if needed, its just an extra feature to use the pad also.

Does anybody else use this method or tried it ?

Re: PS2 controller for PC version

I started this game on PS2, and moved over to PC a while ago. I had a hard time playing with just the keyboard (I hate having to use the mouse). So I tried to get an adapter from Radio Shack. The only thing they had in stock was a Nykon PC controller that was similar to the dual shock.

It's been working fine for me since (a little over 6 months). I've heard other people say their Nykon controllers died on them too quickly.

How many threads regarding this exist?

To answer your question, I'm sure many people use this method, yes.
I personally have a PC controller though, which works exactly like the PS2 version. I started on PS2 initially, so I know.

Next time, use the search option. You'll see many threads regarding this topic, and all the people that use them.

I have a logitec controller...I love it. I mapped the movement and camera to the sticks and it makes movement so much smoother.

Re: PS2 controller for PC version

I used to use a PS2 controller for this purpose, as I have a parallel port adaptor that has worked quite well over the years, but I quit using it for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that FFXI has some kind of conflict with the NTPad XP driver that causes it to crash on exit.

PC Gamepads fit the bill reasonably well. I have a Logitech gamepad which is effective, though the lack of proper calibration hurts (sometimes gets far enough off-center that even with a pretty high dead zone it registers movement; only fix is to quit and unplug/replug the gamepad).

And yeah, mapping movement to an analog control on the pad is quite handy, especially since you can't move/steer on the numeric keypad while typing. And as a THF, I'm not sure I could do my job effectively using only keyboard.

Re: PS2 controller for PC version

I started out using an adapter with a PS2 controller, but the adapter would ocassionally make my character get stuck turning in circles. I would eventually get it to work correctly, but it got tiresome after a while. I finally switched to using a Logitech USB controller that has the same button layout, and I've been completely satisfied with it.

Re: PS2 controller for PC version

After killing two Logitechs (the analog sticks loosen up and won't hold center) I got a Playstation/USB adapter from Radio Shack. We got a second one for my wife's pc as well. Other then some driver issues I had when I rebuilt her HD, we haven't had any issues.

You can also use an Xbox 360 controller for the PC. Those things are probably the most comfortable controllers I have ever held. (although the d-pad isn't that great at all)
