Initial game update 6 hours?

I have 4mbit broadband, I download at average 400k+.
Im the only computer on the internet, I tested downloading from a website and its a steady 400k

I have just installed FFXI, when run the game it wants to update, it says it will take 6 HOURS! left, is this normal? Is there no way to download the path from a website instead faster?

SE has a very backwards download system, the likely reason is "PS2 compatability" if you were to ask them. Unfortunately, you have to download through POL Viewer, and yeah, about six hours to get it all from a base install. I went through that myself recently. And don't let anything happen to your connection during it, otherwise you'll have to download patch information and check all files (easily 30 minutes) before you can start downloading more files again.

It was a jarring expierence for me.
I actually stayed in front of the t.v for the first hour until I gave up and left it alone...
It's worth it tho. To say the least.
But I can only imagine how many impatient people were discouraged by the installation alone.

Well I tried to install FFXI on my new laptop. After trying to update 10 times I gave up. Why does it have to check all the fricking files every time? I do find it absurd that you cant continue the download after a disconnect. Well I guess I'll have to blame the "PS2 compatability" nonsense.

Yes you can, assuming you made it past the checking files portion. Once you've actually started downloading files, you don't have to d/l them again, and it also checks the d/l'ed files faster if you do have to restart it.

Yes, but still it checks all files all the time and I got disconnected either during the file checking it self or after the first few downloaded files. I never had this problem before but my internet provider is being sold to another provider and is gradually migrating to that provider leaving me with a bad internet connection, hopefully this will become better when I'm migrated. Also recently I have a home network of 4 computers of which 3 computers are running permanently, taking their share of bandwidth.

Well, for you new users keep this in mind, I'm assuming that you have gotten the full set, game and all expansions, FFXI, RoZ, ToAU, each one of those should be about a two hour download for someone with a fast connection.

Also you are downloading all patches for all of those as well, which have really added up over the years, so it will take awhile.

LoL Adam from X-Play complained about the same thing. My advice is this. Once your all done an can play. Make a back up later in the week. That way if your hard drive crashs you can extract the files faster then reinstalling everything..

Thats because its working out what update files it needs to download. It takes less time the more files you have already downloaded. And about your ISP change it if its becoming too diconnecty as you'll find yourself d/cing in game alot.

If the downloading of updates fails it will continue next time, however when installing in the final stage you may get the message "error code POL:1155". (see my other post "After update, error code 1155 - WTF??? " in general forum )
I connected direct into the cable modem instead of router and it worked fine, didn't cut out even once and installed fine.

Their servers seem ridiculously unstable and slow, wheres all our money going to?
Why do we download every file individually instead of one compressed file that extracts AFTER downloading? This will speed up the process and stop any type of errors after with a hash check.
Why does it take 30 mins to check the files if this process is done locally? I'm sure my PC isn't that slow.

I haven't got any error updating the game myself. Just need a lot of time. Still, it's true the update system is really old and bad. Just S-E poor attemp trying to raise their retarded baby, Play Online Viewer.

Oh well. It's something we all have to go through. Hope you'll like the game when you get to play it Mostin.
