Re: About Elitists
Probably the latter. And I'm not really knocking your hatred. We all have to have something we dislike. Mine is lol, yours is some unnamed senior citizen.

Protip: Its actually directed at one person, but they haven't been smart enough to notice yet. Or they've died already.edit: That's nice, Legal Fish. He of the hatred for old people (so much hatred that it is in caps, bold, and underlined).

Re: About Elitists
If people are genuinely laughing out loud that often, then they must lead really amusing lives. But I doubt they are.
I just like people who know how to express themselves better than that.
I honestly didn't expect my dislike of lol to come under such scrutiny.

Re: About Elitists
When I see most of you talk I think of those 500-pound women who chant "I'm fat and I'm proud" on television shows like "Murray" or "Ophra".
PS. A lot of you are more biased than elitists. Sure elitist tell you WHM sub sucks for MNK, but you guys attack social lives and the terms they use online. I see someone has already brought out the over-done "HEY GUYS PEOPLE TYPE POORLY AND I'M GOING TO EXAGGERATE THAT TO THE EXTREME TO PROVE MY NON-POINT" routine. I have not read the whole thread, has anyone mentioned that mythical l33t talk that gets no actual use except when people make fun it it?
Elitist: STR Rings suck for TP building, don't wear them, use Snipers. Because I say so.
"Softies": Stop typing "LOL" you are not allowed to that unless you are really laughing. And you suck, and fail, and live in your parent's basement. Because I say so.
Hypocrite much?

Re: About Elitists
So basically, if these people are telling the truth and they're really laughing out loud that often, then it would be safe to say they suffer from borderline psychosis?
I really should spend more time loitering in Whitegate. Or atleast find a shell with a lot more retards. Maybe then this stuff would seem familiar.

Re: About Elitists
I don't mean that they replace periods and commas with it (honestly, far too few folks use those at all, but that's a lost cause), but just that they use it often enough that it may as well be punctuation.
Kirsteena knows what I'm talking about.

I'm confused, do they actually use it in place of puncuation, or do they use it so much that you might think they were using it as punctuation?Originally posted by Murphie View PostOf course it's just an argument in semantics. But honestly, the people who use it once or twice aren't the folks I'm talking about. It's the ones that use it as punctuation that drive me up the wall.
I've never seen anyone actually do this myself, so I don't really understand what it is that they do.

There is a guy I know on Bahamut who uses it as his default word. It's almost like a special language for him or something. Someone says something, and he'll respond with "lol?", and he starts and ends every sentence with it.

Re: About Elitists
I think some of them are funny under certain circumstances and if not used too often. I think orly is really funny, but thats partly how I imagine it being said. I use lol, but only in the context of something actually being humorous. But if I get multiple /tells from the same person and they all require a return tell, but not anything of substance, then I'll usually vary it up with lol, lawl, and w. I just don't like typing lol repeatedly, even if applicable.
I do have one friend in ls who uses the leet speak crap, but he really only does it because he thinks it sounds funny, not because he somehow thinks using it makes him cool.
Oh, and I prefer lqtm over lol. (Laughing quietly to myself.) I prefer to be honest about what I'm really doing.
Ok, I ripped it off from a comedian, but its still funny.

Re: About Elitists
I actually use pretty much all of the little meme born internet shorthand, if for no other reason than to poke fun at it. They can be humorous at times. Additionally, using certain faces or lols to punctuate things can often denote things like sarcasm, which is difficult to convey in pure text.
I dislike that people have lost the ablity to speak proper English. What bothers me more are things like 'tonite' and the such. However, I don't see how phrases like "made of win" are hurting anyone. I also think that disliking lol in exchange for haha and the sort is little more than an argument in semantics.
I can understand shorthanded communication in may endgame scenarios, however, I do have an issue with it on fora. When people ask for help I hate to see a thread entitled "HELP!!@!@$$!!111one" without any clue as to what the thread is about. Then you open it up and it's all, "hay guyz cen u halp me w sumthing 4 this game? duz ne1 no how 2 do it?"
That sucks, and I think if you honestly want help, you need to be able to communciate clearly, but I see no harm in using mildly amusing acronyms in spite of themsevles.

Re: About Elitists
Or you could just type "/laugh" unless you're communicating via linkshell or long-distance /tell. Otherwise, I would just type out "Haha" or "Heh, heh". How that is 'needless spamming' but typing 'lollorz!!!111' isn't is beyond me.Take laughing as an example, how are you gonna explain it in a natural way without having to type roleplay-like?
"hahahahahahaha" <--This for me is 100 times more annoying than lol, I actually consider it needless spamming.
*rolls on the floor laughing* and *laughs out loud* <-- I rather type rofl and lol.
And about faces, I can type ^^ or I can type *smiles gently at this other person because the situation seems apropiate for it*.
By the time I finish typing the moment already passed and the roleplaying just makes it look awkward and unnatural. And in my case I find over use of roleplaying as a very annoying thing.
We're not talking about roleplaying here. We are just talking about basic communication. Nobody uses 'lol' to signify humor anymore. They just say it for no reason other than to be annoying nowadays.
Typical conversation in FF11:
Daos>> Hello.
l33td00d>> hi doas lol
Daos>> What's so funny?
l33td00d>> wut?
Daos>> Why are you laughing? Isn't that what 'lol' means? That you're 'laughing out loud'?
l33td00d>> u r so funy lolz
Your tell could not be received. The other player is either changing areas or has just logged off and is uninstalling Final Fantasy 11.

Raydeus - I know you're not splitting hairs over a made up word.
But if you want to really argue over the semantics of it, I'm both. I'm a lolitist (my made up word that means I don't like lol), and a lolElitist, in that I'm an elitist about certain things, and people find that amusing.

Re: About Elitists
I'm sorry little taru (Murphie) but no matter how hard you try you can't escape the fact that lolElitist is closer to the term than Lolitist.
The use of words like lol as punctuation is painful to see, that's true, same with things like using "r u rdy 2 doo it?". Those I don't understand. Why would someone go out of their way to type like that? (not like it bothers me anyway)
However I don't have a problem using terms like lol and rofl and stuff like that (like emoticons ^^) simply because there isn't anything better to convey the concept not only in a more precise but more efficient way.
Take laughing as an example, how are you gonna explain it in a natural way without having to type roleplay-like?

Sometimes you can't avoid it when you want to explain the situation or the feeling, but if I can use lol and orz and the such to make things get through typing less and in a less elaborated way then I'll do it.
PS > And if anyone is wondering what does this have to do with Murphie's post... well it has nothing to do with it, just felt like explaining the way I see things.
