Re: Wow Expansion hijacks chocobo
It's just a person riding a bird. SE didn't think of that first, although I do think that they've done it best.
I'm not bothered.

Re: Wow Expansion hijacks chocobo
WoW is a seamless world, like Lineage II. How it handles the info is a little different then FFXI or EQ. It potentially can be lagged far worse then FFXI or EQ with less effort.Originally posted by Sabaron View PostAnother thing: Blizzard is very conservative with their models whereas Square Enix frolics in the forest of detail (which I love). I've never played WoW but I bet population-related lag is less common and they can probably show more people on the screen faster than FFXI can.

Re: Wow Expansion hijacks chocobo
That topless female Galken I seen under that waterfall was wearing subligars. I didn't see anyone complaining then ~.^
Oh, and yes. FFXI brought male subligars into the game to support the gay community. Trust me, I know eveything.

Re: Wow Expansion hijacks chocobo
The WoW ostrich is not even in the same league of refinement and beauty as the FFXI Chocobo. The feathers are "hinted" and it's feet look just awful. It's crap. I'm not really of the mind that it's stealing to create an ostrich-like mount. Obviously, since people truly do ride ostriches, the idea comes from real life and therefore no one can steal it since it doesn't belong to anyone (who isn't 1000's of years in the grave) to begin with. Yeah, so some guy got the idea from FFXI... his mind has been tainted by years of Choco-corruption over a series of 11 games and some offshoots. You can't patent/copyright the idea of riding a 2-legged flightless bird--only the birds "design". Therefore, if they just cut-and-pasted the chocobo or called their bird a "Chocobo" or even maybe fed it various "Greens", had a fat one that you can store items in, etc., you might call that infringement, but a 2-legged bird mount cannot be.
As for Blizzard's art, it is generally easier to "cartoonify" something than to actually try to do justice to the beauty of the natural world. Besides, kids love cartoons and it's cheaper to do a half-ass job than using one's whole ass. Remember, they're not trying to win a Carnegie Award here, they're trying to make money.

Re: Wow Expansion hijacks chocobo
Yeah, even though previous games may of used birds for mounts. The think that borders this to being illegal is model concept, unfortunatly the model looks different enough that it can't be considered stealing. Then again the other thing you have to go by to determine if it was stolen is timing. Square-Enix just started the breeding and all then suddenly at a similar time WoW gets these bird mounts.
One thing that is guarenteed is the industry will follow itself. So you'll see MMOs with their own flavor of something another MMO has. Many MMOs generally on top of this have something that's unique to them, something that makes them stand out.
EQ has it.
FFXI has it.
Lineage/Lineage II has it.
Anarchy Online has it.
So many more have it, but I've yet to see anything that WoW does that is truely unique. There entire build so far only seems to be a collection of the general trivial stuff all other MMOs have without the other MMOs unique extras that make them stand out.
Just to clarify things like Equipment Auging, Monster Missions/Assault Missions, Advanced Abilities/Merits, and more of the like exist in many games. Anarchy online for example has it's own version of Augmenting (Not done by equipment, augments go in the body and you can still wear equipment and on top of the augments that go in the body can also be augmented). Even EQ's leveling equipment (it gains exp and changes as it levels) exists in other MMOs, FFXI as far as I've seen hasn't taken this concept yet but the rings with the 2~5 stuff on them is similar to what EQs equipment does when you wear equipment and are below it's recomended level.
Then also you have the equipment were you need all the pieces for an extra bonus effect in FFXI. I'm not sure if this exists in EQ, the location I first saw this concept done was in a MUD called IceAge (The class Warmongers loved this equipment, there was a pretty cool class with an awsome story line on that MUD too. Even cooler that you eventually got to be part of that story line when the tragedy would occure again).Last edited by Macht; 10-26-2006, 10:45 AM.

Welcome to Blizzard entertainment. 90% of all of Blizzards ideas come from other companys, all blizzard does is cartoonify them and change the colour

Re: Wow Expansion hijacks chocobo
How can you people be complaining about WoW ripping off chocobos when that is obviously a fire staff s/he? is using? The audacity!
I dunno, it's kinda hard to say, there are only so many ways to have a ridable giant chicken, well phoenix in this matter, and if that is a phoenix then I'm darn well disappointed in them, no creativity at all.so is it a rip off or what
I would be tempted to say it's not a rip off just because I think I can actually count the pixels.
And actually this makes me want to stray clear of WoW even more, they give the head and legs a lean fast, predatory look, but give the body and feet a big fat chunky look, it feels like it's sending out mixed signals as to what it's supposed to be.

Re: Wow Expansion hijacks chocobo
I don't mind the subligars when a Hume girl prances by in one and yes Hume girls prance. Really Hume girls Elvaan girls or Mithra really can pull off the sublignar.Not sure where they got the idea for subligars though...
I however will not wear a subligar other than Bone/Beetle, and I DO NOT CARE what the stats are on the Bastokan or Republic subligars I will not wear that!.

Re: Wow Expansion hijacks chocobo
I keep trashing WoW because it's a game with 1. A bad community, 2. No real chalange, 3. It's touted as a beginers/casual MMO and 4. it has No real fun content. In short I'd get mad at the players and I'd get dead bored at the same time.
Add this to the fact that I've never really liked the PC/DnD style RPG genre games and there's plenty of stuff for me to rag on XD

FFXI seems to me to have a refined color palette. The designers of FFXI always seek to make things fit in to the world they have created.They take an idea and bring it to conclusion, whereas WoW has always seemed to me it takes it's ideas and gets them to the good enough stage and then they are done and onto the next thing.
In it's simplest terms
FFXI = Esthetic design philosophy
Wow = utilitarian design philosophy

I think the chocobo breeding has gotten out of hand, someone has begun an export business to WoW.
