Lvling my 2nd job - BLM

Hi all

Bit of a disater week really. (this post is part rant, part question so feel free to skim )

Got my RDM to 21, (just), and done choc quest. Yay.

Been trying to lvl my blm sub, but due to lack of space and also lack of money, I have been limited by armour for my BLM, to only a robe. Ya I know. Oh, and a wand :p

BUt lvling this blm is soooooo slow! Currently lvl12, but partying for half a day in Valkrum was a nightmare.

Ok, ignoring the fact that the party itself was a complete mess, anytime i cast a nuke I drew too much hate. and died several times. The WHM in the pt was new to the game so didnt heal efficiently (no macros) and the WAR used provoke 4 times in the whole session.

But, how can I lvl my blm if anytime i cast a nuke, I get slaughtered? OK, couple by the fact he's pretty much naked with like 3 DEF

Been running around all week, joined a really good ls, but char progress wise feels like a done nothing. Did a few quests, riase fame and rank a little, helped a few people out. But im getting out lvled by my commoin online friends...

BLM relies heavily on the abilities of the tank(s). Now, tanking in the dunes is not an easy thing to do, but there are ways you can make their job easier.

First, help the WHM with casting some cures as well. Second, *DO NOT CAST ELEMENTAL SPELLS AS SOON AS THE MOB IS IN RANGE*. That really can't be stressed enough. Give your tanks a moment to establish hate, If they know what they're doing, they'll Provoke the mob as soon as it is in range to get it off the puller, 30s later they will provoke again. At the very least wait for that second provoke.

Well first, if your mog safe is full, you should clear it. At that level it shouldn't be packed really >_>. Make room, put some of your inventory stuff in there that belongs to your RDM, and get full gear for your BLM. Without gear on you'll die alot in the Dunes.

And your death was the fault of the party. If the tank only voked FOUR WHOLE TIMES in the whole session, he sucked as a tank. Don't take it as your fault. If your tank won't voke, just leave the party. No need to waste time and deaths on a bad pt.

Lol the only reason its packed is because I have loads of stuff in there 2 or 3 away from a stack, which I can then sell at AH.

That party was insane. I thought about leaving but then again, i feld bad. The WAR did say at the beginning he was new to the WAR job, but still.

I agree with the point about nuking as soon as its in range, ok. Never thought about that before. What about enfeeb's? Does that draw much hate?

I think the whole reason it was a bad week was becuase I felt like I never really accomplished much. I wanna do so many things, i didnt devote a lot of time to each activity (quests, or farming, or lvling, etc)

I wanna keep up with my friends lvl but she always gets the great parties...so she tells me anyway

I have just befriended a lvl21 MNK last ngith by helping her to do choc quest, maybe Ill party with her for a while

Enfeebles can be used after first provoke. Actually some small nukes are fine too. You'll soon learn what you can do without pulling hate. Holding back is neccesary for Blm. If no one provokes yet, try not to do anything to the mob.

LOL, if noone provokes and I do nothing, then I get shouted at for doing nothing. Then I tell them to use Provoke and send them here. Job done

Oh, to make matters worse, last night on the way to Jeuno, I was riding my choc through La Theine to catch up my buddy i was helping. The second I got off my choc, SuperSheep (Bloodtear Baldurf or something) popped up next to me and slaughtered me in one hit. Then a WHM died trying to cast Raise on me.

Next thing I know I have a party round me, all on chocs admiring the sheep. ^^

I want to get the Mea crystal. But when I go there it says the crydtal was stattered??!

Going to bet BLM to whatever lvl it is to get Warp 2, then lvl WHM for the Teleports. Then, who knows...maybe try a melee job.

The shattered crystal is for CoP missions, walk around to another platform on the Crag of Mea to find the Teleport crystal.

Hmm, if thats the case, just go out and farm the 2-3 you need to complete the stacks. That way you can put them on the AH and free up space.

Buy singles off the AH and sell the stacks. If you are going to start saving up drops like that to stack and sell then I would highly suggest setting up a mule character for it. If you don't want to do that, then look for quests that use the items or npc them. You simply don't have the space to try to save up and sell stuff on your main character. There is simply no excuse to be level 10+ with just one armor piece and a wand. Granted there is a lot more leeway in the dunes but if you don't start working on it now, the problem will not go away.

Yeah, go around clockwise to be exact. Mea is set up with the tele crystal on the west side, shattered crystal on the south, and the east has a demensional portal (don't worry about it until late CoP).

Defense is very important for a BLM in the dunes due to the fact that you do get in bad parties where the tank doesn't voke. Granted, you can't get much for defense, but get it where you can. Go for INT first, then MP, then fill the rest with anything that has defense. Don't leave a spot empty just because there's nothing that carries INT or MP. Put something on.

A robe is a little weak for a body piece at 12. Here is what I suggest you wear. All pieces listed are very affordable. Click on each item to find out where you can get them.

Main: Willow Wand (+1 if possible)
Head: Brass Hairpin
Neck: Justice Badge (Questable!)
Ears: Onyx or Energy Earrings
Body: Linen Robe (Questable!)
Hands: Linen Cuffs
Rings: Eremite's Rings
Back: Cape
Waist: Heko Obi (Questable!) Upgrade to Friar's Rope @14 (also questable!)
Legs: Linen Slops
Feet: Holly Clogs

Oh, and Warp II is 40.

If you need extra space, consider getting a mule character or if you have a bit of cash, most Woodworking students will skill-up on Cabinets at some point and dump loads of them on the AH at a loss. Buy them--they have great storage capacity. Unfortunately, you can only use storage in your home city, so you may want to put these cabinets on your mule instead. The elemental power of cabinets is extraordinary, so it will end up overwriting any other Moghancement you might want/have with Fishing which most people find largely useless. You can buy Armor boxes instead--they have a better footprint/storage ratio but a smaller storage meaning they'll take up less floor space but larger Mog Safe space. Their elemental strength is relatively low which will allow you to override it with other furniture.

Managing space --- Inventory, Storage, Auction House sell-slots, Mules (additional characters), Delivery Box, etc --- is an important part of this game.

When you are farming stackable stuff, try to farm full stacks in each farming seesion.

Auction House is like a big rental place for gears. If the gear is normally in stock in AH (usually common, normal quality gear), consider re-selling it if you are not using it for couple days or weeks. You can re-buy the gear back when you need it.

Do the quest to increase your inventory space and mog house space if you have a chance. Get a mule (additional character) to hold your stuff, if you willing to pay for it.

Are you kidding me? I got my first mule before I got my chocobo license. I put him in Windurst because I hardly ever went there and figured I could use him to buy stuff there.

Like you said, he's only level 20 or so. I doubt he has the money to do Mog House or Gobbiebag quests now. Gobbiebag I requires 24k (Remora pricing) while only giving 5 additional spaces. 28k for Gobbiebag II. Mog House Upgrade 1 requires an investment of 46,500 gil (bed, bow, ring). Granted you can get the money back on the bed, but you do need the 46.5k up front.

IMO, a mule is much more feasible.

Another poster gave you some suggestions about gear, I suggest you stop leveling, and DO NOT CONTINUE till you have the gear they suggested, and all the scrolls you'll need for the entirety of dunes (wait till Windy is in first place and go buy the spells from an npc, anything you can't get from an npc you can either get as a drop or buy it on the AH for cheap). I'm getting really sick and tired of seeing people well into their 40's missing equipment slots or with equipment that's 25 levels below their current (exceptions to this rule are the uber pieces like astrals, bounding boots, empress hairpin etc, I'm talking a level 40 war/nin in Kingdom Boots without a back piece). If you go the extra mile and come prepared, you will be remembered for it, and despite what anyone else might tell you, sometimes the difference between live and death is enough +mp for that last cure or last nuke (even as a taru).
