Most people don't know this, but according to many sources, you actually can change your name.. I've never actually done it myself, but the I have been told that the trick is to cancel your main character so it is inactive after the month ends, then remake it with your former mains' name on a mule(or have a friend do it?). With your character name already taken, reactivating your main will force you to change your name.

I considered trying it a few times to shorten my name and shed any grudges for many mistakes made, but decided the loss of reputation and friends just wasn't worth it. If I did, I'd be a complete stranger to almost everyone. Fun.

Again, I cannot confirm this myself. I have been told that is does work on 3 different occasion, and have read several comments on a few different forums about it working.

Doing this requires deleting your original character and having faith that SE will even restore it. Afterwards you create a character with the same name, then ask for the original to be restored and they'll ask for a new name. Deactivating a character for a month will not let other people take that name, and there is no system built into the game for changing character names.

It's very risky, because you never know what their GMs will do.

I might. I'd very fond of my current name but there are other names I like to ^.^

EDIT: What if SE added a "nickname" feature that allowed people to set a second name that they could change whenever they want. Upon /checking them however, you can see their registered name. This lets people switch names and such for fun but can always know who's who

hell yeah I would change mine.
My ingame name is Neruto
I created a few characters called Amon and Amun, and they worked but i wasn't on the server I wanted to go on.
I used those names several times because I deleted my characters. A few times I got error code FFXI-3301 and couldn't use the name, other times they worked. But when neither of them worked, I just used Neruto and I got on the server I wanted
And trust me, those names weren't taken when I got the error code

I would, but the name I wanted (Vyse) was taken.....and never do I see this name-stealer on.

Yeah, same here. When I used to play on Caitsith, I wanted Haldir... taken. Not ONCE did I see them in the year I was there.

Now I'm on Diabolos, and wanted Eomer... taken. Again, not once have I seen that one either. Bleh.
