You are much better off than I ever was when I was starting out because you are here gathering information. I didn't discover a lot of vital things about playing until I was well into my 30's.
For instance, I subbed warrior (for my red mage) until I was level 32 I believe ... and had no idea why that was such a bad thing! I actually tanked a few Dunes parties. Of course in the Dunes it's not so bad but I can't imagine if I had kept along that path.
When I look back it's frightening how much of a nooblet I was ... I sure wish everyone could start out coming to resourceful sites like this one.
