  • What a bad experience last night was.

My LS (consisting of 7 members) and I are in the process of leveling our subs and advanced jobs (we all started at the same time last February). We all have one job in the lower/mid 30s, one in the mids 20s, and one in the upper teens (and other lower jobs). Last night 4 of us decided to head to the Dunes, and picked out 2 random players. This was my first experience in partying with other people that I don't know in an EXP party, and it wasn't the greatest.

    I played a Taru19WHM/BLM. The other 3 in my LS were a Mithra 20NIN/WAR, a Elvaan 19 NIN/WAR, and Galka 18 WAR/SAM. The two randoms we had were a Taru 19SAM/I forget, and a Galka 18THF/I forget.

Having a BLM would have helped, but I thought it was still a decent setup for a party. Boy was I wrong, we just didn't 'click'.

It all started when our Mithra was pulling, and there were a few too many PTs in the area, so he was grabbing a few tough mobs here and there. I had no problem with it, taking down a tough in a few seconds was better than just sitting on our asses. But man the two randoms started going off! Now our party is just bickering back and forth all night.

When we do get a IT, our Mithra can't handle the damage. And for some reason he was getting all the hate I'd spend all my mana pool keeping him alive. The warrior couldn't land a hit, and when he did it wasn't for more than 8 damage. The other NIN was doing fine, but couldn't get hate either. The SAM wasn't doing much other than engaging every battle. And the THF couldn't get a SA off. He would just stand in one spot, and expect the tanks to line up and rotate so he could alway be behind the mob and not have to move.

Meanwhile the randoms do nothing but bitch about not pulling tough enough mobs, bitch about not being able to get hate off the mithra, bitch about not being able to pull of a SA.

The night ended when the Taru SAM went off and pulled a IT Fly without full health. By the time I had gotten to him he had taken three hits and died.

Next time, I think I'll settle with just having 4 or 5 LS members in a party and getting 150ish xp in the Penninsula while having a good time.

Sometimes parties just don't work out. If I were you I would keep at it, and when you
find a couple of players that do click with your current group, make a 6 member static
    party

Maybe you could just tear through abunch of EM or DCs with the four of you. Just find a place where no one is and go on a killing spree. Besides fun xp you will get some beastmen seals. Win/Win situation.

what were you fighting? at that level in dunes, NIN should be able to blink off most damage fine, especially with 2 NINs. unless the MIT was equipped with mucho +enmity gear, I don't see how he got all the hate, unless the rest of the melee were completely missing.

5 melee and 1 healer? boy are you a masochist.

next time, try qufim or scaramonge (sp) at that level.

We were on a beach taking out Pugs and gobs. We were taking down VTs, but it was a struggle, and only 150xp per.

We were actually in Quiffin just before that, and half the party was wasted on the first crab

Really dunno what to do. I read the forums and guides about what we should be doing 'by the book'. But last week we had 3 or 4 of us taking down VT Zu in the penninsula with ease, and almost getting 200xp per kill.

i envy you, i really do.

to have got as far as you have just partying with friends would be a dream, what you've experienced is a typical dunes party, in my eyes anyway. i'm dreading leveling other jobs through that level range. the attitude there stinks. unfortunately i don't really fancy soloing whm to 20 either on mobs for 30/kill. I wish i could persude some LS mates to party through those levels, but their attitude seems to be ah it's just the dunes, it sucks but thats the way it is. Which in turn leads to the attitude so many have of it's the dunes everyone else sucks so i'm not going to put in any effort either. Which leads to dunes parties sucking. Unfortunately they still expect to be able to take clippers which are too high for them and end up with the whole party hitting for 2 per hit. But it's okay here's the PL to mean that these people get through the dunes anyway. /sigh

Good luck with the semi static thing, anyway. ^^

don't take crabs in qufim yet, go for the worms until your melees get to 21-22.

also bear in mind that almost all of the guides assume you have a balanced party and everyone is equally skilled. for most pickup groups, i tend to find that hunting 1 level lower than waht they recommend is much safer.

And that was the plan, or at least try to have full party with all close friends. We keep all our jobs within one or two levels so that we can get away with that, and avoid random players all together. It will probably end up catching up with us later when we have to join alliances, but oh well.

right, worms in qufim work well at 18-22. though, you will have to compete with people most likely in the center frozen lake area in qufim. also, you'd need to move out of there every half hour or so, because of the undead that come out at night.

they tend to feast on adventurers out there.

taru edit: damn nt has got his trigger finger back. static means, a group of people you play with exclusively.

right clippers are more from 21-22+, thats why you were getting torn up.

yeah thats what it means. It's a great way to level if you've got a group of friend organised enough. Theoretically theres no reason why you can't take it to 75 as a group. And even for missions and such where you need an alliance you're in a good position. You're in a good position for COP missions too i think, although having to pick up randoms/try and organise my LS, i've not got far with them myself.

What you just described is a static. A semi-static is not quite a full party, and fills out with random pickups.

As for your experience in the dunes, sometimes it just doesn't work out. I can't stand when people complain about not being able to kill 200 base exp mobs, to be honest. As you become more familiar with the game, you'll find that VTs and low ITs are where it's at. If you're getting between 120 and 180 experience per kill, you're doing right. It's so much easier to build and maintain chains against slightly weaker mobs: the melees will hit harder and more accurately, debuffs will be easier to stick, the tank won't take so much damage. All in all, it makes for much more fun exp, and you'll find that the amount of exp you earn over the course of the party will be far better than if you overhunt.

Yea, we should be set once we each get all three jobs to 30, and we should be fairly balanced.

My Taru will be BLM/WHM with a DRK (just did DRK for fun to level with my LS)
The Galka will be a SAM/WAR and already has a MNK at 33
The Elvaan is going to mainly be RNG with THF or NIN sub
Our Hume I think is going as SMN/WHM, but may go WHM/BLM
Mithra is playing NIN/WAR and has a MNK at 30
We have a Hume RDM/BLM, but he is a little behind and only has those two jobs
Another Hume is currently WHM/BLM, but he wants to pick up DRG if he can catch up
And we also have another in our LS that played years ago, he isn't doing much until we catch up to his 55 RDM/BLM

It is really nice playing with the same guys every night, and chatting on a forum at work the next day about how the previous night went and what the next plans are
