Story time with Ampersand again. Huzzah!

Throughout my FFXI career I have been party leader longer than ten minutes maybe a dozen times. I've found a replacement here and there. And I've filled out the three empty spots in an LS Dunes party (then kept going for several hours after the LS members left). Yesterday was the first time I've ever built a party from scratch, and it was not an encouraging experience. (For those of you keeping score, all those times I said stuff like "on the rare occasion I make a party" were bald-faced lies. Lies!)

I started Sunday off seeking on my 32 BLM. After spamming the AH for goblin masks for about half an hour, I took another look at the search list and decided to give the whole leader thing a try. Sent people the kind of tells I like to get, and ended up with NIN/WAR, BLU/NIN, WAR/MNK, RDM/BLM, and WHM/BLM for Eastern Altepa.

The ninja joined fairly early on, and didn't have his crystal. So while I built the party and switched to WHM to teleport, he was airshipping to Bastok. We both showed up in Zeruhn Mines at about the same time, so there really wasn't all that much time lost getting him the crystal and getting to camp. Things looked like they should go pretty well at this point.

Unfortunately, the ninja didn't have any tools other than shihei. And he was using Utsusemi maybe twice per battle. So hate was bouncing all over the place and he needed far too much curing. The RDM told me kick him or he'd leave. So I brought that up in party chat, and the ninja disbanded.

I honestly don't remember the exact sequence of events after that. We got up to six members again (after taking a few beetles more slowly with five), and then the BLU left, replaced by a DRK. Then the RDM left anyway for Dynamis. Another replacement lined up, and the WHM dced. While searching for replacements, the WHM returned. We went with five for a little while, still looking for replacements, and the WHM decided it wasn't going well enough and disbanded.

All this time, of course, there are perfectly viable replacements hanging out in Kazham, Jeuno, and Garlaige, none of whom have the teleport crystal. I offer to escort a few of them, but some don't want to make the trip. And then the party decides they'd rather just wait on someone who has the crystal (taking it as an indication of a higher-quality player).

Eventually we end up with WAR, DRK, (much better) NIN, WHM, another BLM, and myself, 31-33. The WHM hit 34 after a handful of fights, and the other BLM (31) said "If XP sucks I'm leaving." This started an argument between the WAR and BLM, resulting in another ultimatum from the WAR (roughly "her or me"). The BLM left on her own. And then the NIN threatened to leave if I didn't kick the WAR for bitching too much. I told him it hadn't been a problem until everyone else started bitching, and she was the only one who hadn't just left with no notice this entire time. He lol'ed and didn't say another word about it.

So we're down to five again and I'm looking for a replacement when the NIN disconnects. Again, the only viable replacements are halfway across the world and nervous about the trip. This is when I give up and pass leader to the WAR, who has no better luck than me. The WHM goes to Rabao without a word to the party. The next thing we know, he's disbanded, and then runs past us in SAM AF and starts leveling his NPC.

Half an hour later, we have a RDM, WHM, and DRG, and start up again. Things go all right until we decide to try Dhalmels. I think even that would have been all right if we were a little more on the ball. But the WAR ended up dying twice, and then the DRK had to log off because of massive connection problems. We got a WAR/NIN, and after her and the WAR/MNK got communication down (one death later), it was going pretty well. But the WHM only had half an hour, so when he had to leave we just disbanded.

Somewhere in the back of my mind I'm aware that this is just how things go sometimes, and it wasn't really my fault or anything. But great googly moogly. I think I'll go back to just seeking like a good little mage.

For anybody who took part in my little party on Remora yesterday (especially Druantia for sticking with me that whole time), thank you for your patience, and I'm sorry it wasn't the best.

Edit: Also, from now on I'm not getting grumbly when someone asks my TNL even though it's in my search comment. I couldn't keep track of that worth a crap, either.

I'm surprised you stick to your hunting ground even tho the ninja didn't have the crystal. That's 1 patience you have spending that amount of time just to reach the camp.

On a side note... A ninja who can ride an airship but doesn't have althepa crystal is just... I don't know what to say >.>

Well, at the time there were already two parties in Garlaige and none in Altepa. I figured as long as the rest of the party didn't have a problem with it, I'd do the Mr. Helpful thing and get the crystal for him. But yeah, Rank 5 without the crystal is a little odd. o.O

And this is why I consider making a party as a last resort. Most often I just put up my LFP flag, a nice Search comment, and then I go Craft/Quest/farm and wait for an invite. I think almost all of us have been in those shoes, maybe not as a PT leader, but definately in a PT where things kept going wrong like that. Ellipses, I salute you for giving it the effort.

Great googly moogly is right! You deserve a medal for trying so hard, Ellipses

All those disconnects sound really suspicious... except that I, my friends and LS members have been having a lot of connection problems lately, too. I'm sorry that things didn't go better. I wonder why so many players don't have the Altepa crystal.

Stranger things have happened, I suppose.

I'm NEVER suprised when people don't have the yhoat crystal, even at my level that one is a pain in the arse to find. The only way I can reliably get there in the first place is teleport-yhoat. *wishes she could use Tractor and Teleport at the same time*

My rule about building parties, is, as I am a WHM, is to find a tank and a refresher. If I can find those two, I'm set. Any job can DD and I beleive a BLM is just icing on the cake. I am perfectly compatable with rolling meleeburn parties and being alone in the mageline.

If I can find a tank but no refresher, I'll try to build a pt anyway, but with jobs that don't requre much if any MP. I can use juice and cookies.

If I can find a refresher but no tank...I won't attempt.

That's not to say I won't join a party without a designated tank. I've seen some very GOOD 'pinball' parties where everyone takes a turn being hit. But I cannot build a pinball party that works. There will always be a THF who complains about hate being wild, not being able to land Sata, a blackmage who gets nervous, and there will most likely be a LOT of little mistakes that will start to get bigger.

Re: "Make your own parties," they said

There were actually only three DCs. The WHM who ended up coming back a few minutes later and joining party again immediately, the DRK who was lagging like crazy for ten minutes (and that was actually a log off, not a DC), and the NIN (the only one I'd classify as the least bit suspicious).

The thing with the crystal was a pretty even mix of people who'd never heard of it or didn't know how to get there and people who just hadn't gotten around to it yet. I think I might take some time this week and just shout in Jeuno asking if anyone would like an escort to there and Rabao. I know the thought of making that trip terrified me when I didn't know what I was doing.

Re: "Make your own parties," they said

Generally, my experiences as a PT leader have not been so bad. The thing is, you have to be willing to be rough. If someone is distracting the PT, tell them to stop or leave. Don't be afraid of disbanding or waiting for a replacement to the point that you let people die. For example, I was invited in to a CN PT on my WAR sometime last week, where I was immediately given leader. Bad Sign#1. I was given the position of pulling, because the RNG refused to. Bad Sign#2. I was ALSO made the main tank. Bad Sign#3. I check the WARs, one of them is in NIN EQ (AGI, Evasion etc.), the other one hadn't gotten new equipment since Lv31 (At lv41, he was wearing NQ eisen, those lv31 picks, etc.). Bad Sign#4. Actually pulled, and the BLM, despite repeated warnings to slow down with his nuking, would usually wind up tanking half the fight (of course, as a low40s WAR, I don't really have much going for me in the hate department except voke, and with an ugly amount of time spent fumbling with shadows..)

Anyway, I got fed up, and told the PT we were disbanding in 10 minutes. None of them complained.

You're the PT leader, you take responsibility for what you do. Don't give me leader because you're too much of a pansy to kick someone. Don't be afraid to go to the crappy camp if everywhere else is taken. And Don't blame your PT for your mistakes. It's not the NIN's fault for losing hate, it's yours for fighting spiders and being four levels above them.

Re: "Make your own parties," they said

I start the majority of my parties (except for when I'm playing WHM), and I've dealt with a lot of this crap too. If I have any advice, it's that you have to establish from the very beginning that you're not going to put up with a bunch of bull from everyone.

I tell people that I insist they listen to me, not because I want to be Little Miss Dictator, but because a party without a leader is just a mess. It's perfectly cool to get input from other members (especially in areas you're unfamiliar with), but there really needs to be one person making the final call on where to camp, who's going to pull, who's going to tank (at low levels when this is a question), etc. Then, you have to be willing to back it up by kicking people if they don't want to play along.

All I ask from the people I party with is they show up with whatever equipment/food/weapons they need (reasonable NQ stuff or better), a good attititude, and a willingness to work as a team instead of blustering around making demands. Anyone's free to drop party as they please if they don't like it, and if you act like an ass, I'm more than happy to help them get started LFG. My parties are generally fun (lots of chatting and banter), and we pull on the better side of moderate exp (4-5k+ per hour).

I rarely make a party myself, but everytime I make one and there aren't people I know looking for a party... in my mind I start playing a little game I like to call:

Well, the pts would've been bad if you were leader or not. They certainly weren't your fault. One big advantage I see to starting a group is you won't be led by a rank 2 war/mnk who insists on doing things wrong.

Oh, and dhamels are really bad to xp on in altep. They have a really large lvl range and you may be able to beat one and then get creamed on the next one.

I usually only start parties when I'm at a lvl I've been through before. When I'm at a lvl where I'm going someplace I never exped I just throw flag up and wait for an invite. Sadly I'm going through one of those phases no with my 53 war and I haven't had a really great exp pt yet. Though none of them have been horrible, or even that bad, they were all slow 1-2k an hour pts at best, something I can practically solo.

Whether it was lack of mobs, lack of DDs or just plain overhunting, my pts take forever to get exp as of late. ._.

Thanks for the advice and everything, guys.

I don't have much of an authoritative streak. It's something I have to sort of... get into character for, so I'll have to remember that next time.

And yeah, Dhalmels there are iffy at best. I've had parties that can tear through them like paper (on BRD and WHM) and parties like last night's. I know they're really party-dependent but I haven't really figured out what the magic elements (other than competence) a party needs to take them down reliably.

Crap, even I have the Altep crystal, and I don't do much. Funny story behind that...I wanted to be a SAM and once my RDM was about 25 I decided (I'm not sure why this made sense to me at the time) that I needed to get to Altep-Crag because there was a telepoint that joined to the Yhoat-Crag (I guess?) which was close to Norg. So I would just teleport over to the jungle, run to Norg and be an ol' Samurai after a few levels. I didn't have maps, a pt, or a clue. Some merciful soul gave me money for all the maps and escorted me to get my crystal.

                            I'm a moron.

The in-game information is very...lacking, so it's very easy for me to see how people who don't surf FFXI message boards would have no clue that Altepa was a good xp area for mid-30's or even how to get there. If they aren't playing a WHM/RDM job then even if they do figure out how to get there they still need to spend 30k+ on sneak oils, which unless they have gotten PT invites they probably don't see as a pressing need.
