  • Lag... a good thing?

Now I know we all hate lag, especially in Jeuno. Lag sometimes cause something funny to happen though. What were some of the funny things that happen due to lag?

    I'll start.

I was in Upper Jeuno with my gf. We were doing a quest, and she was waiting for me at an NPC above some steps. She was sitting. When it was time to go, I saw her slide the steps down on her butt before actually getting up!

    Your turn! :D

    Re: Lag... a good thing?

See that too, people butt walking, its especially fun with elvaans and galkas XD

    Moogle sightings in town.

Flying people - riding chocobos, but the chocobo wouldnt load.

People going across walls and other obstacles, thats either HAX0R or lag.

Airship not being there - try logging out a sec before the ship comes, then quickly relog in, the airship arrival animation restarts, but it's already there, so you can "hover" around for a short while, its funny to say the least.

1-second crafts - if it's really laggy, you just see yourself sitting and imediatly get up, this is because the craft animation happened but you lagged and didnt get to see it, gives you the impression that you just crafted really quick.

And lately, in besieged uber lag - as a BLM, i casted thundaga 3, it takes quite the while to cast... but the bar wouldnt show up! and i tried re-casting, but it kept giving me the "cant cast now" message.. so yea, i thought i broke something so just decided to go whack the mobs with my staff, so i get up close to the mob, hit it, and i see a 3 digit number.. and thought to myself.. whoaly crap!.. but it was thundaga's damage, the game must not have registered that i moved because it lagged alot, but somehow i was still able to hit the mob, which was probably just the animation flow, i never really hit the mob, because soon you will realise using -ga's in a group of mobs 500x stronger... isnt so healthy. I died right after the damage poped up, but never saw my staff hit/miss... so .. i just thought it was kinda funny, stupid, and lame.

My understanding is that the moogle sightings in town is not a bug. The greatest load on a server isn't when people are in the zone, but rather when people first zone in. This is because rather than just drawing the information (which is what happens on your computer when you run through a zone), the server actually has to proc your entering into the zone.

It then has to feed all that information to anyone/everyone in the zone, and in turn proc all the information about other people back to you. I don't know the exact order or manner this is done with, but it does have to be done.

Think about Lower Jeuno. Its one of the few locations likely to have all model information loaded, as well as the most gear in the game. It also has to send the names of some 200-300 people so that it can show them (this information isn't downloaded when you "see" a character like /check thier gear downloads thier gear).

Then there's also all the NPC names for the zone, doors, etc. All this is already sent to you I believe, and then just displayed when you get close.

The bulk of information sent to and from the server while in Lower Jeuno is /sh, and a short range of /em and /s, and the positions of people around you. Then, also the information goning between the AH server.

The Lower Jeuno zone - because of its large numbers (mostly) but also because the number of zones servers it communicates with (Upper & Port, Rollanberry, and Jeuno MH zone) causes a lot of system lag on the server.

Anyhow, point is, ton of information and -most of it- caused by zoning (notice how they removed the Al Zahbi hompoint crystal to reduce lag?).

So now that I've been unnecessarily long winded I come full circle back to mogs in the middle of town. Its not a lag bug. Its actually a feature. When a city zone server becomes saturated with lag, a mog appears in the middle of town. This allows people to temporarily access MH in the city without having to zone to a different server. Since zone causes biggest ammount of server lag, and MH -> town is the biggest portion of that... Poof... lag be gone.

You may or may notice these mogs -always- appear in the same place, too.

Under normal circumstances you see this only Lower Jeuno (if you /sea when you first see the mog appear in Lower Jeuno, its usually during times when there are LOTS of people in the zone). However, I've personally also seen it in Windurst and San d'Oria, both of which occured during particularly popular holiday events (causing an increase in server load).

I don't remeber where the one in Windurst is, but the one in South Sandy is east of the auction house, but west of where the normal event moogle is.

Huh.. i doubt SE would do that without telling us.. its just not really the way SE does things.

It might be a moogle for other types of players, like GM or something else.

Or it might be something else totally unrelated, but it does look like its caused by lag, maybe the zone info doesnt load as fast, and it actually thinks youre still inside the moghouse. Why do i think this? because you can easily change your moghouse into any other zone, the moogle stays in his place but the zone changes, who knows if this is what's happening when you exit moghouse? the zone changes and so do the characters loaded in that zone, maybe, just maybe the moogle simply takes longer to fade out.. but alas, who knows.

So much for your funny stories. lol

I didn't make this post to get all technical. It was for you to share first hand what funny event you saw or experienced yourself.

When I first encountered the problem I wrote it off as nothing. When my girlfriend at the time encountered hit (promptly upon logging in near sandy AH, no zoning involved other than initial load-zone), she saw it as well and asked a POL GM how to fill out a bug report. They told her not to fill out a bug report, it wasn't a bug (at the time they wouldn't explain further because according to the GM he "couldn't offer game support for Final Fantasy.")

            Double Post Edited:
As for the OP, which I meant to answer...

There's the infamous Airship bug that PC users can jump off airship mid flight. You can also use it to end up "in" the engine.

            Double Post Edited:
There's also a few places in jeuno (upper right before Batallia downs) where you can get stuck on flat terrain.

              Re: Lag... a good thing?

Last night gave me an amusing Lag moment, amusing for me since it happened to another player. The DRK in my party died while I was in the middle of casting Cure 3 on her. Luckily, we found her a raise. The kindly mage raised our DRK then promptly casted Cure 2 on her. The DRK went through the motion of being raised and had her life filled from the cure... Then she fell over dead again before popping back up quickly.

Then there's always the amusing Raised Character Can't Move Their Arms graphic glitch. It makes me laugh every time I see someone running around with their arms pinned to their sides... Funnier when it's a galka using Flee and can't move his arms.

I've seen those 2 before. I couldn't stop laughing when I saw the Hume running with his upper body completely stiff. lol

What about fishermen? XD If you lag while a fisher is loading, you see them with their arms wide open, and then a very quick shift to the holding-rod motion, like they were clowning around and they noticed you so they stoped, ashamed of their silliness ahah. I saw a galka like this in windy :>

My favorites are when fishing, and the pole shows up on the ground between my character's legs-- very commen when fishing at the airship docks in Port Jeuno.

The other is when playing a song on a wind instrument, and every so often the instrument fails to render and it looks like I'm playing my dagger :D

In Kazham, right outside the entrance, someone died. When they raised, someone immediately cast cure on them, and they slid around the floor dead, I could not stop laughing. XD

The Lower Jeuno moogle appears at the same spot for me everytime, and I can only access my mog safe, can't change jobs or get deliveries.

                          Re: Lag... a good thing?

Let's see...things that happen while lagging for me:
"Communication seems to be congested" errors while trying to send or receive items.
I teleport everywhere on other people's screens. This makes for amusing conversations from the people that don't realize I'm lagging. ("omg ur hax")
Monsters/NPCs don't always load for me. This is especially fun in al'taieu with UFOs and sharks.
Doors generally don't open. I end up spamming the enter button on a door until I'm finally able to pass through.

The only semi-beneficial things lag has done for me...
I'm able to suicide train stuff further distances. They get a few shots in on me, then suddenly I'm 10m away...they chase me down and suddenly I'm another 10m away... They eventually kill me (I tend to last a whole 10 seconds longer than normal).
Also, I found out that if you r0 (and your connection % starts going down) while flee is on, you flee longer than normal. Your connection has to bounce back before hitting 0% for any of it to count. It's not something you can really force (pulling the plug gets you an instant POL error) so I don't see the harm in mentioning it. D: I only did it twice. I don't want it to happen any more, I already have enough people thinking I'm "hacking" because of my lag-jumps.
