PO question

As much as I would love to play FFXI all summer, I have a pretty busy schedule that involves me being out of the country for two months (I wont give the details other than it's for college )

Anyway, since I'll be gone, I don't want to end up paying my subscription when I can't even play the game. So is it possible to cancel my account now, then when I get back I can re-activate it without losing my character data (I only have one content ID and I don't want my character erased )?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I kinda need an answer to this in a hurry (I'm leaving tommorrow morning )

I've heard that if you cancel all of your contentIDs without deleting your character, your subscription is cancelled but can be reactivated anytime with your characters.

So how would I do that, is there an option on the the PO menu that is specifically meant for suspending an account?

Also, when I get back, how would I re-activate it?

You do not suspend your PO account, you cancel content ID's. Your character will be there to reactivate by inputing your cc info for 3 months. After that time, you'll have to call them and they can and will (only once) reactivate your account for up to a year. But do NOT cancel your PlayOnline account! It is free! If you do so, your game codes WILL be invalid after 3 months!

Edit: At the screen where you usually click PLAY, go down to Content ID. Click that and at the next screen it says Cancel ID. It's that simple. Cancel all your mules also.

PlayOnline upped their storage time from 3mo to 1yr after one of the "Return to Vana'diel!" compaigns.


Basically, cancel your content IDs [what you pay for. POL itself is free], do NOT delete your characters, when you come back, choose "Reactivate content ID".

Okay, so this is what I do:

1) Do not cancel my PO account (its free )
2) Cancel my Content ID (don't delete my character)
3) And when I get back, I just choose to re-activate my Content ID

One last question, is there a code/password required to re-activate your Content ID, or do I just click "re-activate" and my account will automatically come back?

You need your name and password for your account. You also may need to re-enter your cc info. If you find you can't just reactivate your account when you come back, just call them. I just reactivated one of my accounts recently. I had an account that I let my cousin use, I had not used it for 4 months and I could not reactivate it via POL. I just called and took care of it over the phone.

Not true. In fact, it wasn't even true two years ago. I stopped playing for seven months, and when I came back, my character was still there waiting for me.

They said "Three Months or it's gone" as a way to 1.) Keep people from cancelling, 2.) Provide a basic guideline in case they were to decide that they needed to delete some characters that had been dormant for a while in order clear up space I guess. It was basically their way of saying "We can guarantee your characters for three months. After that, it's a crapshoot."

Now of course, they've changed it to a year, but the same sort of guideline applies, I suspect.

Oh no, believe me, they mean 3 months and it's gone. I assure you, I can attest to this. I was just able to get my character back from return home to vana'diel a month ago.

Anyways, SE says three months simply because there are times where they might need to clear or condense databases. You can be assured that when they remove a character from their database they back it up in a condensed file, and you must apply to them for it to be restored. Your character should be safe for the trip.
