I think I just nailed your problem in one.

Re: Where is the achievement in this game?

I'm beginning to lose intrest in this game, for any other game I'd just move onto the next one but I've made friends in this game and I'm looking for something else to stay for
      there's your answer there ...

i believe that is your 'goal' in this game

friends seem to make this game enjoyable for you ... so go out and make more of them

as many have replied, there is a wide variety of possible activities available in this game for diversion

an activity that you might not enjoy alone, you might find loads of fun with friends

i personally play ffxi just for diversion, like watching tv ... just a way to pass time

perhaps try and role play a bit ... don't play your character as your RL self, but as a person inside the world of vanadiel

perhaps develop certain idiosyncrasies, certain habits, certain ways of speaking ... etc for your character in game ... if possible try and pick traits and role play things that you wouldn't normally do in real life

just go out and meet people whenever you can

i like meeting new people myself, and often times in game i would make the effort to start up converstations with perfect strangers ... it's quite easy really ... a good way to start dialog is "Hello"

opportunities are around all the time ... it's just a matter of taking advantage of them ^^

      jingy of ifrit

Oh God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"

Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on"
God say, "No." Abe say, "What?"
God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin' you better run"
Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killin' done?"
God says, "Out on Highway 61."

Re: Where is the achievement in this game?

I get satisfaction in this game from succeeding in difficult situations, helping others, and learning new things about the way the game is played and the game world itself. As such, I usually avoid getting help with quests and missions until I've tried it myself and found it to be utterly impossible solo. Rewards are worth what you gave to recieve them. If you have so much help that your contribution was meaningless, then the sense of achievement you get will be nothing.

I see you're a whm. The stealth spells you get from that job let you do certain things much more easily than other jobs, but if any combat is involved you're probably not going to get very far. If relying on other people robs the enjoyment from you, maybe you should consider a more self-reliant class like rdm, bst, or nin.

Edit: Reread your first post and noticed you're interested in smn. Like the others noted, smn can be very self-sufficient. After level 20 they're able to solo even exp level mobs to an extent, and some BCNMs can be soloed by smn only.

Also, try level capped events. I know you've done the shadow dragon, but that's really the easiest thing in the game. He's a pushover. Others like BCNMs, Garrisons, etc force everyone down to an even power level and give you an appropriate challenge.

Re: Where is the achievement in this game?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll wait it out for my avatar fights and CoP missons as well as trying to make new friends along the way. I've put in a suggestion for garrison to my ls although I was not on much last weekend and neither was my ls leader so nothings happened yet.

I find farming and in some cases exp parties boring. The things which others seems to say give you a sence of achievement, subjob, chocobo licence, kazham keys and advanced jobs did not really give me a scence of achievement. I think mainly because a bunch of high level players did everything for me, I just tagged along. The exception is my chocobo licence which I did myself but chocobos were a bit of a let down, sure they're faster but now I have to go to places further away. The 2-3 dragon fight was a disapointment as well, it was just too easy.

From looking around, the things I have to look forward to are my mini smn avatar fights, CoP missons and the lvl cap boss (Maat?). Although all I need to do for them it seems is follow a step by step guide and be lucky. The funnest thing I've done so far was the Gustaberg tourist quest, fighting lizards at lvl10 in the dunes and Tigers at lvl24. In those if we messed up we would all die but I've done nothing like that since. Most other exp mobs seems to be either really weak e.g. worms, crabs and mandies or have annoying moves that can kill you if you just happen to be unlucky e.g. Pugils (Screwdriver) Damselflys and Giants AoE moves.

I'm probably being overly negative but then I usally am. I want to stay because of the friends I've made but I don't want that to be the only reason. So there most be something I can find exciting in this game. Please don't give me "This game is not right for you, go play game xxxx" answers, I want it to be right for me but I've just not got there yet.
I'm going to bold what your problem was with the lack of achievement. You think that was the reason? Well it is. Do things for yourself next time. With the bare minimum of help.

Re: Where is the achievement in this game?

In games like Everquest, World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XI, the leveling IS the content. If you prefer to blast through the leveling, to immediately play in the end-game, then you deserve to miss out on a lot of the content.

If you're looking for a game where leveling comes in second to the end-game content, then try out Dark Age of Camelot, Guild Wars, or Shadowbane, which are almost entirely Player vs Player oriented.

Re: Where is the achievement in this game?

Well I'm VERY happy and proud of my achievement in this game. ^^ There were 2 goals I have already completed, out of many goals.

1 of it is obtaining my Ebisu Fishing Rod. This quest took me well over 6 months.

2 is completing CoP missions ^^ This story line took me well over 1 year...
While I was inside the final boss BC I almost cried out of joy.

Re: Where is the achievement in this game?

This game, IMO, is not for just any casual gamer, I am in NO way saying that you are one. I am simply stating that you might have to set goals, what do you want to do?

                  1. Do you want to take several jobs to 75?
                  2. Do you want to complete the story? (it is amazing)
                  3. Do you want to experience endgame activities such as dynamis, limbus, gods?
                  4. Do you want to be a reknown crafter?
                  5. Do you want to RP?

I have seen many people leave the game at early levels, and I think that the game takes a totally different turn once you hit 75. The community that develops in thisg ame is incredebly amazing.

There is much to do in this game, LOTS, and now with the new expansion added, things just got better. Not to mention that they are addint the chocobo circuit, and other stuff.

I would advice that you give it some time, find a jobe that you ENJOY. If you want my humble opinion, your info says you are currently leveling summoner.... well I am a level 75 summoner and I can accutatley tell you that SMN is not the easiet job to level, find parties and do stuff. I LOVE the job, and it is a great job, but you might want to try something more standard like a bard, black mage or red mage.

Just always remember that a game is a game and should be FUN.

Feel free to ask me anything else!

Re: Where is the achievement in this game?

I think mainly because a bunch of high level players did everything for me, I just tagged along. The exception is my chocobo licence which I did myself but chocobos were a bit of a let down, sure they're faster but now I have to go to places further away. The 2-3 dragon fight was a disapointment as well, it was just too easy.
I can see how the game probably isn't as much fun for people just starting out now. When I started, at NA release, every little thing was exciting and fun because EVERYONE was doing it. Starting with the subjob quest (the quest for ghoul skulls), everyone was participating and trying to achieve roughly the same goals. There weren't high lvls to help, and I think this really enhanced the experience (there were high lvl JPs, but it's hard to communicate and they didn't help out with stuff like subjob quest or the dragon).

Everyone pted from 25-30 in Quifim because someone with a Kazahm pass was unheard of.

Nowadays, everybody is Plvled, their keys are Kazahm keys are gotten for them, their subjob items are handed to them. All of the fun and challage is totally gone from the early lvl content. It's not anyone's fault, it's just natural to happen when the majority of the people are high lvl.

Also, it's probably frustrating when everyone and their sister has at least one 75 job. I took almost a 2 year break and I'm only 72 and I feel somewhat left out with all the people with 3 75 jobs and amazing gear.

This issue is why I'm looking forward to the next MMORPG game that SE releases. You just simply cannot reproduce the feeling when everyone is the same lvl and going through things for the first time.

You could try to forcefully create the same situation by only doing things with people of your same lvl, but getting everyone to agree to not take help will be hard, not to mention that just knowing you could have whatever quest done quickly and without effort would taint it.

Re: Where is the achievement in this game?

Its very difficult for other people to tell you what your acheivments are as everyone has their own perception of an acheivment in any activity. what you need to do is find your own acheivement, what gives you a buzz when you doijng something in game and if you manage to acheive the goal of the task giving you this buzz that is a great acheivment.

In my personal opinion sticking to the game, investing your time and money into soemthing you enjoy is an acheivement of patience and commitment 2 traits employers look for when you apply for a job, just think of that. the game is more than just a game (and yes there has been a discussion on that) you get more out of it than you think.

Re: Where is the achievement in this game?

Hamlet has a point, while having High level help can drain the fun out of a lot of activities in the game, a lot of the time it can be hard to avoid, as a new low level player it can be hard finding people of your own level to do a quest or mission with, and a lot of the time even if you do they'll either bring a high level to help them (and you) or refuse to come unless someone organises a handholding bodyguard.
Or you can ask in your linkshell if someone want to come and do such and such a mission, and two people of about your level and one HL offer to come, the two other lowbies want the high level help, what do you do?

That said, when i started the two main things i wanted were, an airship pass, and my manequinn, i have got my airship pass at last and am on my way to getting my manny now my LS has started doing Garrison. The main reason i leveled was to open up new stuff, there were jobs i wanted opening up, and of course i wanted to do my missions and get my airpasss. I took a big break after i hit 30 and explored loads of content that opened up to me. when i was running out of things to do i focused more on levleing and realised soon i would get my airship pass.

Now as a 43 RDM i can see the pimp hat calling me a few levels away, my crafting which i took up to make juices, is 51 and if i can hit 60 i'll have another few profit recipies. My manequinn will be complete as soon as i can get my LS organised enough to do the BCNM20s. What after those goals? I'm not sure yet, so far the game has presented me goals as i've achived ones i've been aiming for.

                            http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/gen...o.license.html

a perfect example of how there are challenges (and therefore achivements) in the earlier game that are still available. it's just that so many of them are glossed over these days.

Try putting in the experience section of your resume:

"Played FFXI online for 3 years for a total of 80 real life days (1,920 hours).
                              - learned the importance of working well with others
                              - mastered the art of doing repeated tasks without losing concentration
                              - studied under the tutilage of a master teacher (Maat)

                              Titles received:

                              Mog's Master
                              Mog's Loving Master

And maybe for the title of your resume you could put:

"Worker (Do you need it?) (Invite to Join Party)?"

Re: Where is the achievement in this game?

I remember trying to get my Magiked Skull. Wow, that was the most disheartening thing I had ever encountered. Two weeks later I was still without a skull and I didn't want to level my main any further. I was sitting in Selbina totally disgusted after shouting in the dunes for a skull pt. (Yes actually pts were formed exclusively to get that dang skull!) Someone struck up a conversation with me about what I wanted to be and it eventually turned to the skull. Well he happened to want a skull to and then another person chimed in about needing one and yet another. So now we started to do shouts asking people if they were having problems getting one and if so, come join us!!

Once we had a fair amount of people we set out in the dunes to hunt down ghouls. We shouted for people to tell us the pos if they saw any. (Believe it or not but back then people weren't such jerks and actually did help by shouting the pos!) We became discouraged and lost a few people though when you could only hunt them at night. People just didn't want to sit around waiting. Then someone joined out alliance and said he heard of a mine somewhere off the Highlands where the ghouls were out all the time. So we shouted for more people and said we were taking an exploration to this mine. We soon had a full alliance!

So off to the highlands we went. The trek through the dunes was fairly uneventful. We had a few aggro but with so many people it wasn't a problem. Now the Highlands was another story...... LOL Since we didn't know the location of the mine we had to explore. It wasn't too bad when we got aggro but sometimes people wandered off and would come running back with multiple aggros while we already had an aggro that we were killing!

The best was when we were so intent on killing something and someone said..."Do you hear that?" and "Why is my controller vibrating?" Ya we came in contact with Stray Mary. We were all laughing and going WOW!! that thing was HUGE!! Well the dead hp'd and some came back but they brought replacements with them. We found the crag while waiting for them to come and helped guide them there. Shortly after that we found the mine and everyone was so excited yet scared because we had no idea what lay ahead.

The mine was HORRIBLE! There was death everywhere and we needed to settle down and focus. A couple of times we had higher lvl people raise a few of us but more often than not we had to hp and come back. But the skull drop rate was fairly decent and most people stayed on after they got their skull. If we were down a few people and respawned in Selbina or by the Highlands zone in the dunes, we would shout telling people what we were doing and ask for members. Our alliance was always full or nearly full. Many many hours were spent in those mines. I was one of the first to get mine but I stayed for 6 hours helping others.

Afterwards we all agreed to let people know about this place and the position of the crag and the mine. We spread the word and soon going the mines for your skull was a regular thing in the dunes. Alliances and friendships were made and adventure was to be had!

The point of my story? This adventure and fun is gone, as Hamlet said. There is no discovery for the new people, no comradery, no adventure, no fun... Our society is one of FAST FAST FAST, I want it NOW! We just don't stop to smell the roses anymore. Same goes for the game. Try to tell the noobs in the dunes that they have to make an alliance and then run around in a zone they have never been in until they find the right spot and then go in there and eat a lot of death and come back and do it all over again. What kind of response do you think you'll get? And then they wonder "Where is the achivement in this game?"
