Teamspeak or Ventrillo?

    Teamspeak or Ventrillo?

    I'm just wondering if there are any people out there who use Teamspeak or Ventrillo with their friends, or in their LS's?

    I fully understand that at times having voice chat up is a little difficult, especially on a program that disconnects the moment you alt-tab. Not to mention that it can ruin the immersiveness, or roleplaying features of the game, but I imagine that Teamspeak would certainly help to organize PT's and LS's. Surely there is at least one LS out there who uses it?

      I have two linkshells, both of which use Ventrilo.

      My social shell, Hamburglars, tried Teamspeak for awhile, but the sound quality wasn't that great. It was a lot laggier, as well.

      Now, we have a 50 person Vent server for under 15 bucks a month. You can't beat the price.

        You don't need to be looking at Vent all the time though, unless you wanna switch channels or something. 'Course, for a while you'll be wondering "Who the hell just said that?" when someone speaks, but eventually you get to know who's voice is who's.

        It does wreak havoc on the roleplay environment though. When I was playing WoW, the RP guild I was in had a Vent server, and we spent more time dicking around on Vent than roleplaying for the most part. It's handy for organization and socialization though. You could basically be in one linkshell while talking on another linkshell's vent. No need to switch pearls or anything.

        I'd recommend Vent though. It's really the better of the two (and the most widely used, I imagine).

        Teamspeak was made primarily for FPS players, who needed a low-bandwidth chat program so that their ping rates didn't go to hell while chatting.

          I've used both and Vent is the way to go. Our LS has a paid server and it can't be beat for organizing things and communicating quickly during battles. It makes you leaner, meaner fighting machine thats for sure!

          But even when there isn't an event, its awesome to communicate with one another about lifes little events and sometimes devestating big ones. Also good to be able to ask peoples opinons about jobs, equips, etc. I wouldn't give it up ever.

            I have both d/l to my pc. Would use TS with a friend I was in an LS with. Downloaded vent recently b/c another friend I was in an LS with is in an HNMLS now and I occasionally do lower level missions with them and they wanted to be able to talk while we did them.
            Have to agree with TGM, vent is much better than TS. Less static, clearer talking. I like the interface better too.

              Our linkshell uses Vent, and it is great - not only is it wonderful for events, but an afternoon when not much is happening you can just dick about and have fun. And you do recognise different people's voices very quickly.

                I don't know about Vent, but there's a plugin you can get for Logitech G-15 which will show which user is currently speaking, which is handy when you're confused.

                Myself, I likely wouldn't use it unless I knew the people, partly because I hate electronic talking (I hardly even talk to family other the phone) and partly because you might as well keep SOME of the mystery.

                    Anyways, my LS uses Vent and everyone seems to really like it. It seems to
                    help alot with events, except for I don't have it (PS2 and old ass mac).

                    Now I get left out of some funny conversations and sometimes strategy before
                    events... (can you tell I a sour towards vent?)

                      hehe My guild in WoW liked to poke fun at the fact that I was RPing a female gnome, yet when I spoke on Vent, I was the furthest thing away from female. And gnome.

                        We have a couple of people in the ls that play female characters. Everyone goof around in game with them doing emotes and such. We all know they are guys but they didn't talk on Vent.....then one day they did. It was funny how the emotes and goofing around in game slowed WAY down after that!! LOL

                          Vent is ftl... if you're going to use Vent for your LS, don't be a tool and set it to a codec not everyone can use. -.- I play on PS2, and own a Powerbook (Mac). There's an issue with the Vent client, that unless the codec is set to Speex and not GSM, people using the Mac client can't talk, and they can't hear anyone else.

                          My LS was kind enough to switch to Speex... for like 6 hours or something stupid like that. I spent 2 hours getting everything configured, happily chatted for an hour, then when I logged on the next day they switched it back because "the quality was poor." -_-;

                          My old LS used Teamspek- never had problems, no one complained about quality and worked fine.

                          If you're not going to be make it available for everyone to utilize, thenit shouldn't become a core staple of day-to-day LS operations. I can't tell you how annoying it is to have to ask the same question in LS chat a dozen times before I get a reply... or having someone ask a question in LS chat and wait for the answer, to find out they answered it in Vent chat. Not to mention people replying to Vent chat on LS chat... which just confuses the hell out of those of us who CAN'T get on.

                            For FPS play it is a must to have one or the other.

                            For FFXI... well I type at about 80wpm, so, I can usually say what I want fast as I can open my mouth anyway.

                            I've played with both TS and Vent though, and I prefer the TS interface, VS was a little too dumb looking for me, though I've never had the opportunity to use Vent in a real situation. I've used TS though while playing WoW and CS with friends of mine who absoultly refuse to type for whatever reason.

                              I have tried those, and I like TS by far. Better interface and the sound quality is good. I guess I am one of the few that likes TS over Vent
