wow that's really long. Did you pick up the normal version? Or the new DVD collector version? The DVD version is said to have a more up to dated game file included, so it may help you not have to download so long.

It took me about 6-7 hours on DSL to update the game too.

unfortunately, w/ dial-up line the update takes freakin' long. i have an optical fiber line w/ the max of 100Mbps (around 55Mbps actual tho), but still takes a couple of hrs, as it also has to go thru the lengthy file checking process. so, u really have to just wait till it finishes.

as for the terminated update, it should resume from where it got stopped, both for the file check and download.

and 56k is more than enough to play this game; just slow updates.

        Re: starting the game

I'm having a very slow, and difficult (if not, impossible) time with PoL too, and I have an ADSL connection (american equivalent of DSL) to the internet, which is considerably quite bigger than 56k.

I just tried to log onto the official Play Online Site to try and get into the little "Friend's List Plus" link near the top of the page, and it's either loading up very near snail's pace, or not at all.

Come on SE! I think you need to buck your ideas up some more, and get this sorted out!

It's been just over a month now, and I ''STILL'' cannot play FFXl!

A new DVD Collector version hey? This may help me too I think.
Is it possible you could post a link so that I can see what this version looks like, and ponder on whether to get it? It would be helpful if you could.

Are you joking? Mine always has to start again, from the beginning of the update, everytime it times out with the usual PoL error, which isn't considerably much better.

Ahh well... I guess I just have to keep trying and hope that I get there.....
          one day. *sigh!*

Dont worry, about 54% of those patch you download had been patched to your computer most probably. if you did take notice, example at the last file which it got couroption or stuck somehow someway which is maybe file 1680/2520 files,
the next time you login and it will begin the download of the patch again and then resume the patching from 1680/1680 and so on. so basically you aleady had patched those files from 1680 to 2520 at the start from this example.
What you lost is the few hours taken for you to download the patch files.

POL always download patch files then patch the files into your computer.

Hmm... maybe its your service provider. I have 56k. Yes, I have been through that "freakin long" download process. Heck, it took me almost 24 hours (yes! a day) to download all the patches. My version was the 2004 with the Zilart expansion. CoP also took "freakin long!"

But I haven't had any problems after that. I play fine with 56k. So, I don't think its the connection.

snowball: ADSL does not stand for American DSL...

the collectors DVD has both expansions and all updates until (about) June 05. However, even with that installed, I still had about 2-3 hrs worth of updates (on 2Mbps cable).

                    Thanks Yyg!

I think you confuse me a little here, sorry.
Anyhow, I just meant that in the USA, they have a DSL connection to the internet, but over here in the UK, I think it's roughly the same thing, except we call it ADSL instead.

I had to reinstall my game and found that updating only PoL doesn't really take as long as updating the game itself. Waiting for PoL to update to the latest version only took about 15-20mins, (heh heh, I wish the game took this long to update too) but the update of the game actually takes around a painstakingly 3-4hrs. *OUCH!* I guess PoL is actually smaller than the game, which is why it didn't take very long.

I got to 99% at updating my game a couple of days ago, and what does it do....
it stops...... dead in its tracks, and doesn't complete the last bit.
How annoying. (after a long and tedious 3hr wait too)

Anyhow, I'm going keep trying until I get this finished, and hopefully I will be able to play again soon.

DSL stands for digital subscriber line and comes in two varieties (actually there are more, but these are the common consumer ones): synchronous (SDSL) and asynchronous (ADSL). We have both in the US. The way you worded your initial posts seems to indicate that you thought they were different names on the other side of the ocean.

Best thing to do is just leave the game updateing while you go out or sleep. That way, you won't notice it so much (kettle watching syndrome).

Another helpful tip is, if you have the extra harddrive space, is to copy your FFXI folder to another directory once you have it all patched up. That way, if you ever have to reinstall the game, just copy the folder back over instead of waiting for it to patch all over again.

                        Thanks Yyg!

make sure u back up the POL Viewer folder as well. it's also where all the macros and other user-specific data is stored, thus u won't need to re-make all the macros u've worked hard to make. of course, this saves u the time on the POL update as well.
