I was thinking, as I always do, about ways to improve FFXI. I was pondering on the idea of player relations, and what seems to be a recent rash of rip offs in the past month. We all know GMs can add marks to your record. I've devised a way for players to negatively mark their peers without the possibility of abuse.
This system would only be used for serious complaints. MPK, claim stealing, scamming, and the like would all be acceptable reasons to lodge a complaint with somebody. When you lodge a complaint you describe what happened, and once it's been lodged the other will have a chance to respond. The complaint and response will be listed in both participant's profile for the public to see. You will not be able to lodge anonymous complaints, therefor it's your reputation on the line as well as the person you're complaining about.
GMs will review each lodged complaint as time permits and act accordingly. The GM will attempt to "mediate" the situation which may or may not include a discussion between the participants and the GM. When the GM has collected enough data appropriate action will be taken. Accounts will be marked accordingly as well. If the person scammed you, his account will recieve a black mark. If you reported somebody for no reason, you'll recieve a black mark. We all know what black marks lead to.
On top of that, you will lose fame in the other person's home nation. If I, from San d'Oria, lodged a complaint against some scammer taru from Windurst who stole my scorpian harness my fame in Windurst would be lowered. The taru's fame in San d'Oria would also be lowered. This would last until the situation has been mediated by a GM and they've cleared it.
This really can't be abused because GMs will review all complaints in a timely manner. GMs wont have to worry about Help Desk calls as much, because people will now have an easier way to complain about other players (which is what, 75% of Help Desk calls?). Players might also reconsider complaining about a certain person if the reprocussions could affect them in a negative manner as well.
It's also my guess that this will help alleviate the gil selling problem. If they resort to dirty tactics you can lodge a complaint against them along with other players affected, which does add up. It might be a helpful feature for GMs to mediate players who have the highest number of complaints lodged against them first, instead of first complain first serve.
