What Do These Symbols Mean Please?

Hi.

I'll have to try and describe this with the use of links to ingame screens I took, since I cannot think of any other way to describe them.

Okay, well, ever since I first started playing, I have always been quite confused over what these symbols mean. (these ones I marked by my own arrows)

The pics are quite big, I know. I'm sorry about that.
But I thought that if I made them smaller, you might not be able to see what I'm referring to. I don't know really.
But here they are, and I just wanted to know what they meant, or were used for.

As a wild guess, would they be some kind of elemental properties, or am I completely wrong here?
I don't know how many different ones there are, so if I had a list of them somewhere, it might be of help.

They are elemental protections ^_^ The higher the number near the symbol the more protection against that element the item offers.

Resistance against certain elements. For example Shell Ring +1 gives Resistance vs Fire +3 and Resistance vs Water +3 when you equip it. In your equipment menu below where it says Attack and Defence you can see your total elemental resistance. In your case (picture 3) you have Resistance vs Fire+7, Resistance vs Lightning-2 (meaning you're more susceptable), Resistance vs Ice+2 and Resistance vs Water+5.

You can increase resistance to all eight elements (Fire, Ice, Water, Thunder, Stone, Wind, Light and Dark).

NB: The amount of resistance you currently have will have little effect. It's not until you get +50 or more that you start to notice the effect. Bar-element spells (eg Barstonra etc) will increase your resistance to a respectable amount. You're a WHM, cast Barstonra on yourself, look at the equiment menu and see how much your Resistance vs Stone goes up.

Just FYI, Enhancing Magic effects Bar- spells. At level 75 RDM my Bar spells give over 90 elemental defense.
