Hey I never have played FFXI and am looking to see if it is worth trying. Currently I have been playing Ragnarok Online for a year or so. I have always loved Final Fantasy games. Now that I am getting a new computer that can support FFXI, I have been looking into if it is worth trying. If you have any comments about how RO and FFXI are related or different, I would love to hear it. Thank you for any advice that you give that I find helpful.

ro and ffxi have significantly different gameplay styles.
ro focuses on soloing to advance whereas ffxi REQUIRES you to be in a part to advance in levels. you'll notice that as soon as you hit levels 10-15.
i would suggest to you, though, to try out ffxi for a month because you can't get a feel for it if someone describes it for you. and if you just by a new package, you get one month of gameplay free. also, don't buy the expansion unless you know you're going to dedicate yourself to ffxi. it would be a waste of money to get the expansion and then you think that you're not going to play ffxi.
at any rate here's my personal opinon about ffxi and ro
ffxi >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> roobserve the splendor of ping pong balls!

FFXI sucks if you want to spend 2,000 hours getting to level 50, you'll still be called a noob and unless your a PLD, WHM, RDM, BLM, BRD, or RNG you'll NEVER get party invites past level 60, stick with RO on this one.
I was completly disapointed in FFXI's poor character models, sure they look good in the select screen but when you see the person your going to be playing forever it looks like shit, plus the battling system gets pretty boaring, and the prob is its the best and only way to fight in party's for exp or else the PT is gimp and you die and lose EXP.
If your like level 70 and you die once you lose like 7,000 EXP A.K.A. 3 hours of work. Just save yourself and dont.

uihn...no you dont lose 7000 exp .. you lose 10% or less of your total tnl which is 44k at lvl 75. so you lose 4400 exp without raise or bed in MH .. which is very unlikely at that lvl.
Before i started playing FFXI i played RO too... i have a lvl 83 hunter on chaos (which was high lvl during my RO days.... dont know how many people have reached 90+ now)... But i quit..because there was NOTHING to do.. and i mean NOTHING... only exp exp exp..same boring 3 areas over and over again. no quests no story just kill stuff... it sucks.
FFXI is all i hoped it would be and more.Rank 10 windurst.

After level 70 you dont lose 10% you lose a set amount of exp roughly 2200-2500 per death.
Please dont lie about FFXI just because it wasnt for you, To the OP please do more research then make your own choice.
FFXI isnt for everyone, but many people that complian seems to think it should be.It's Official Promathia Hates me....

Hmm, actually I'm level 75 with less than 180 days of play time(when I reached it and that is pretty slow IMO), and some of those time periods I was afk or was crafting my smithing, or fishing, so not all the time will you be exping.
*edited hours to days, sorry mind is still in work mode.Hacked on 9/9/09

It was fun when it was to get a bunny head band but something a little different for the rest would have been nice.
I used to play alot of RO but FFXI is much better IMO. There's alot more to do and a cool story line to follow.
Try FFXI for a month. If you like it, stick with it.

Hey thanks for the advice. I think I will give it a try for a month. If I like it I will play it. I don't think I will ever give up RO though. There times I get bored with a game and have the urge to do something different. I guess I can just switch on and off depending how I feel that month. Thanks for the advice. Keep on dishing it out. I will be almost clueless whenever I will ever be able play(when I get my new computer). And thanks again!

I played RO from alpha. I stuck with it all the way until approx. 2 months after FFXI release. I played both FFXI and RO at the same time. So yes, please do that. I think you'll be amazed at the differences. The biggest most glaring difference is that there are actual things to do in this game. All I did in RO was lvl up and hunt for cards. They would occasionally throw in an event to spice it up a little but then it was back to the same old thing.
Now for the people that are going to say FFXI gets to be the same old thing, please understand that if you haven't played RO you can't understand totally. In FFXI, there are quests, missions, cut scenes, and crafting for everyone...and more. In RO, you lvled, got drops for $$ to buy uber equips, and hunted for the cards needed to make some equips uber. And the bot issues were horrendous. Bots that took your exp and your loot, making it even more boring since it would take even longer. FFXI is so much more.
Don't get me wrong, I loved RO. Very Very much! There are things I truly miss. I guess the biggest one is the GM spawning mobs IN THE CITIES! Awesome fun! Or Dead Branches! I remember a time when you could use them in buildings and the weapon shop in Prontera was down for an hour with a huge pile of bodies at the door! Had a ninetails on the loose in there! LOL So try them both and maybe you'll choose one over the other but then again maybe you'll end up playing both! Who knows!Originally posted by FebaBut I mean I do not mind a good looking man so long as I do not have to view his penis.Originally posted by TaskmageGod I hate my periods. Yes, I played RO for a free trial. There really wasn't a whole lot to do. I was gonna pay for 6 months of it anyways just because it was a nice break from playing FFXI...but I ended up not doing it.
BTW, whoever said that about FFXI's character models sucking...FFXI has some of the nicer looking models out of all MMOs. I mean, sure, they don't look as nice as Lineage II or EQ2's...but then again, those are pretty much brand new games. FFXI has been out for a while. Just be glad they don't look like WoW or EQ models.---

As for getting Levels fast, the only reason some people state it to be impossible is because like sheep the followed the crowed. If you arn't a sheep and have done some exploring in the begining levels you'll have a great sense on which areas will work very well to level. Then the only problem is getting more to go along.
With a good party and leveling in areas that people oppinionate as being bad places to level you can gain levels far faster then the sheep. Hell as long as you arn't going with the entire mindless crowed you can beat them with less effort in a good party. It's very simple as to why too, 300+ players to compete with to kill 10-15 some monsters getting 1 or non each spawn cycle, or 20+ players to compete with with 10-15 some monsters you get to kill round cycle and not hope to finish off all of them before next spawn cycles (That's were you get those really high chains that seem so mythical to some players).
Hell my first chain #5 and above I got at lv. 12....So many people at that level going to valkrum dunes to fight all the other parties for those lizards while I bribed a party to come over and we got free killing spree on all the worms (We got a little greedy with it and probably to aggressive for our own good, we did end up having to zone 2 times before of linking to many gobs as a result of our cockyness).

Chances are, if you're more into the RO gamestyle, WoW will be more to your tastes that FFXI.
FFXI is a completely different game altogether from RO.
