  • PS2 Version Settings

First, let me just say that if this belongs somewhere else, I'm sorry and feel free to move it.

I got the PC version on the NA release date, and played it pretty consistantly, but I was tired of interuptions, distractions, and brother wanting his share of time, so I got the PS2 version, w/ the keyboard. My dad helped me set up a wireless router so I can play from my room. I have a few concerns about graphic quality.

The characters, background, hell, almost everything seems pretty blurry, mostly farther off people/objects, is there a way to enhance the graphic quality for the PS2 version? Could it be that I'm playing on a small screen (I think it's 12in.)? And will moving to a bigger screen (16+) help this issue?

My second concern was the size of the text box, text, party commands and spells/abilities/food I have on. I remember I did something on the PC version to make all these smaller to give myself more room to see, is there a way to shrink these things on the PS2 version?

Thanks for any and all input.
    My sig.

Using S-Video cables(if your TV supports it) should make for a sharper picture, and slightly better graphic quality. Also switching to a bigger TV might help. The graphics really aren't that bad, but then again I'm not used to incredible PC graphics or anything.

The only thing I can think of here is changing the minimum/maximum lines that are on the chat log. I think you can also change the delay so that it closes quicker. You can do that in the config menu if I remember right. Hope this helps..

You can't change the graphics settings in the PS2 version. The PS2 has terribly outdated hardware and the only thing you can do is get used to it.

        Thanks.

What's an S-video cable, how do I know if my TV is compatable, where can I get one and for how much?

I'm not talking about min/max lines, the actual size of the box and text itself was smaller, but I guess I'll have to get used to it like this.

The overlay resolution of the FFXI ps2 is 640x480 (what your tv can handle).

TO get better looking quality, svideo takes the yellow (video cable) of the RCA (Red White and Yellow) make makes it into 2 different streams of color.

To see if you have one on your tv look for something that kinda look slike a PS2 (not playstation 2, the thing you use for your mouse/keyboard if you don't use usb)

          http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/224939.asp

The next step up is to get a set of Componet video cables. YOu can tell if you have 5 connectors in a strait down line on your tv. This takes the video and puts the color into Red Green and Blue signals.

is where you can get some of thouse.

depends what kind of tv you are using...when i play on the tv in my room the graphics are a little blury...when i go down stairs that are pretty sharp...play around with the settings until you you get a nice picture...and dont go to big on tvs...on a 50 inch it looks kinda bad lol

Get a bigger TV. I have to switch between a 37" and 13" TV, depending on what's on TV. (hehe) I have 20/20 vision and i can barely read stuff on the 13" sometimes.(very blurry) S-Video will help, but in the long run, a bigger tv would be your best bet.

yeah I am going to have to agree, I bought a new TV for FFXI after typing to play it on my little PSOne LCD screen (don't ask lol) But yeah just getting a bigger TV would be the answer....expensive answer but the answer nevertheless.

I have 2 TV's, the one in my bedroom is a 20" JVC, and the one in living room is 27" JVC. Only the 27" has s-video, and it makes a huge difference in clarity. The better the TV, the better the game will look (to a certain extent)

As for the other issues, its a pain having such a large HUD, but theres nothing we can do, but limit the chat log to the 6 lines. The draw distance, and overall lack of clarity is just the PS2's limitations. If you've played on a good PC, its going to look a bit ugly. For me, it looks fine.

I know this is kinda hijacking his post, but does the PS2 version support progressive scan?

well I would think it would if your TV (or computer monitor is you are running it off one) supports it. I can't really say for sure because my TV doesn't have the option. But yeah if your TV has it you could get it.

Has anyone seen the difference between S-Video and Component on the PS2? I currently run FFXI on a 53 inch Panasonic (usually run it on split screen though with the other half running cable) and i am either going to get the S-Video cables or Component hook ups for the PS2 (my tv supports both). According to those links the price difference is about $50, would you say it is worth it or not to go with the Component vs. the S-Video??

The only major difference between S-Video and Component is that Component has a better color stability then S-Video. S-Video because it's determining every color threw a frequency that's just slightly off to indicate color between 0 and 360 or something like that.

Component though does the color by the 3 primaries, and then feeds definate value for all three. So if you adjusted the video feed from S-Video and Component they look very similar in sharpness and everything, only difference is during actual movement and time that passes.

What you'll start to notice with S-Video vs. Component is that maybe certain lighting effects will change on you (given that you are in a setting were lighting effects never change, game that does perfect for this is ones like Socom. The playing fields lighting effects never change). I know on my S-Video connection at times I'll have it display the image slightly darker in shaded areas making objects vanish at time and other time it'll seperate the shading between the two just enough that you can see the object.

If you sit in front of two TVs side by side one with S-Video and one with Component and set them both to match in color and sharpness after some time you'll start to notice the S-Video color display slowly shift off the color it was. So a color like Cyan will start to get a darker bluish color or a darker greenish color depending on how the S-Video interprets the frequency being fed to it.

                            EDIT:

Also with Component how the quality is you get threw it will depends on weather it's Interlaced or Progressive scan. If it can go Progressive you'll definatly get a better quality image and color stability with the Component, if it's Interlaced then you'll have a better color stability while still but will probably see more jaggies while moving so S-Video will definatly be better.

Wow Thanks for the informative reply. So i take it that the PS2 does not have progressive scan? I know most of the newer DVD players do, but the PS2 has been out awhile now so im assuming it may not have that feature.
