  • what do japanese players type on?

i cant grasp the concept of what a japanese player would use to type.

    http://world.std.com/~jdostale/kbd/KanjiTablet1.jpeg

    something like that?

i'm stumped, there's so many japanese characters i thought...

how could you fit it on a keyboard style thing.

they type using an english/japanese keyboard

the keyboard has 2 settings, 1) it can type in romanji

example: yoroshiku (treat me nicely, used when you first see a person).

    2) it can type in direct input.

(I can't do that example very well because well, I took out japanese input off my pc).

when you type you have a small window that comes up after you type in a word.

if you typed "doomo" in you would get the characters for do-o-mo and they would be highlighted. you can press the spacebar to bring a drop down menu for anything that is related to do-o-mo, including the Katakana (long / forign words) and the Kanji (that tablet).

    hope that helps :D

Just for you, I have decided to reinstall it for you :D

      example:

      も

      and my name would become:
      アンドリュー・ヤング

With a small drop down box...

      Hope that helps enough :D

I couldnt imagine how big there keyboard would be if they included a key for every Katakana Hiragana and Kanji they use. It would prolly be as big as my room =/.

I think most people have never taken a Japanese class before and dont realize that for the most part you just use Hiragana. Katakana is something that sounds difficult but really isnt. You guys can guess what words like Hanbaga or Konpyuuta mean right? People also see Kanji and are just boggled by it, so its mostly a matter of ignorance.

It actually makes alot more sence in some ways. The concept of long and short vowels isnt necessary, and the letters make the sounds they are supposed to (Particles excluded).

That's not a problem in many languages using "our" letters.
In Finnish all letters make the sound they are supposed to and they always sound the same. Long vowels are made by putting two of the same wovel in a row.

While hiragana/katakana isn't difficult to learn, I find kanji to bit a bit unnecessarily complicated. Add spaces between words and I bet we would be just fine without kanji.

i wouldn't call any native language needlessly complicated. Languages evolve naturally. Actually Japanese people have a harder time learning Engrish than we do learning Japanese, alphabets and all.

While Kanji might not be as efficient as the Latin alphabet, it does have a 4000 year history and a lot of artistic use too; you gotta admit some of those symbols look cool in calligraphy

I think you would be refering to the Chinese side of the "kanji" (It's not kanji in Chiense). Japanese Kanji dosn't look very cool >.>.

                            Also, it's not complicated,

http://japanese.about.com and click on hiragana to learn, it's easy, and will take you like an hour to learn it.

                            edit:

Mid, if you're talking about the symbols? it's really not that hard, although word of warning, the hirgana underneeth the roman characters ARE NOT DIRECTLY RELATED!

example, underneeth "Q" you have the hiragana for "ta". (Pronounced "Taa")

                            Under "A" you have "chi"
                            (Pronounced "chee")

                            z - tsu
                            w - te
                            s - to
x - wo (written in romanji as o)

ect ect, I could go more in depth but I think this is ok for now :D

                              probably bigger than that. :spin:

in Daikanwa Dictionary, which is like an Oxford Dictionary of Japanese Kanji, there r as many as 50,000 Kanji letters contained. at the same time, however, it's said that in normal daily life of Japanese ppl, the number of Kanji needed is around 3,000.

a graduate of Japanese high school is expected to know 5,000 Kanji letters, as per the guideline by the Ministry of Education and Science. but in reality, we don't know that much. i'd say it's about 3,000. (thus as mentioned above, as many as we'll need in our normal life.)

Unicode 3.0, one of the several computer input standards, contains about 20,000 Kanji letters, of which 12,000 r Japanese Kanji, and the rest is of Chinese, Korean, and "old" Kanji. compared to the number in Daikanwa Dictionary, some say it's not just enough. for the most part, it lacks many of "old" Kanji letters, which r still used w/ ppl's names.

this fact makes it a lot harder to learn Japanese as a second language. the reason why many Japanese have hard time learning English rests w/ something else. while like some of u, ppl say Kanji isn't really needed in learning Japanese, but if u wanna take it to the higher level of study, Kanji simply can't be avoided. as a matter of fact, sentences without Kanji, while they should be used, r a little harder to read, because we use them as standard and things not in accordance w/ the standards look strange and consequently become harder to read. (of course, in spoken language, this won't be a problem.) and what puhfyn said "Japanese people have a harder time learning Engrish than we do learning Japanese" isn't really true. it's even proven by the study, that in order to master Japanese as a second language, it takes approximately 10 years, while it's 2 years for English.

btw, just so u know, we don't have any problem w/ using English keyboards to type Japanese. most ppl in Japan use Romaji way of typing Japanese, thus only use alphabets to type. as a matter of fact, i use an English keyboard that i bought back in US w/ Japanese Windows, and have no problem at all.
