How do level 3 skillchains work?

Everything I have read about L3 skillchains is completely confusing.

Even the article in Vana'diel Tribune seemed like it was talking gibberish when it "explained" the level 3 skillchains on this page:

    http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/vt/extra/03-3.html

I mean, "combine two L2 skillchains to make a L3 skillchains"....what the hell does that mean?

It's also puzzled when they say that "L2 skillchains are made by combining L1 skillchains." Take Distortion:

Distortion (Water & Ice) = Light ---> Earth

Now, how exactly is Reverberation (Water) & Induration (Ice) "combined" when Distortion requires Light followed by Earth?

One way to make level 3:
      Level 1 weaponskill -> Level 1 weaponskill = level 2 skillchain -> level 2 weaponskill = level 3 skillchain

red lotus blade -> combo = fusion -> shark bite = light

Second way to make level 3:
      Level 2 weaponskill -> level 2 weaponskill = level 3 skillchain

hexa strike -> shark bite = light
      Warning level cat face.

lvl 1 skillchain = Induration, Impaction, Liquification, etc. they have 1 elemental property to them.
lvl 2 skillchain = Fusion, Distortion, Gravitation and Fragmentation. They have 2 elem properties.
lvl 3 skillchain = Light (Fusion + Fragmenation) and Dark (Gravitation + Distortion) and each contain the 4 elemental properties of the lvl 2s.

Lvl 3's are interchangable, meaning you can go Fusion into Fragmentation or Fragmentation into Fusion for the same end result.

You must go lvl2 into lvl2. You cannot go Impaction -> Liquification -> Fragmentation. Even tho that would produce all 4 elements it would not work.
            Some examples.
Swift Blade (Gravitation) -> Tachi: Gekko (Distortion) = Darkness
Howling Fist (Light) -> Vorpal Blade (Earth) = Distortion -> Asuran Fist (Gravitation) = Darkness.
You must close a lvl3 renkei with a 225 or quested WS. Only lvl 225 weaponskills and quested weaponskills have lvl2 properties. Huh? Yeah thats confusing so follow along.
Tachi: Enpi has two properties. Light and Earth. You can chain Enpi onto Enpi to form Distortion. Tachi: Gekko is Distortion. It cannot be split into Light or Earth. What that means is it can only produce Darkness and not function in a normal skillchain. There is a small exception to this, but lets not get into that headache.

As for lvl2s and what exactly makes them 'combined' is just they way they decided to make it work. Maybe it was an afterthought. Most mobs in the game are weak to Ice. Most weaponskills in game either have Light or Earth properties and in one rare case, both. But there is no real clear pattern as to why Fire into Thunder = Fire + Light where Light -> Earth = Water + Ice.

Weaponskills have more than one level?

So what constitutes L1 WS, what constitutes a L2 WS, and why am I only now learning there's "levels" to WS's (and not just Skillchains)?

As far as I am concernced all WS under level 20 are lv1 and over lv2 but you need level 65 or 71 Lv2 to make Dark and Light as far as I know.

So the skill 225 and above skills (which btw NO OTHER SITE listed the elemental attributes) do not have the same "attribute system" as the conventional ones that I'm used to seeing?

Why couldn't they just SAY that instead of giving me confusing Skillchain guides?

the 225s have a different set which some people refere to as Lvl2 WS.
The quested WS have a lvl2 and lvl1 component. Asuran Fist is Gravitation (lvl2) + Liquification (lvl1). It can preform both lvl1 + 2 renkei and lvl3 if it has its counterpart (Distortion).
The system is still the same, it just has a new factor.

You where looking at a 'how to' guide, not a list of weaponskills. The walkthrough explains how to create lvl3s.

So why do most English sites lack this data on these 225+ WS's?

Because they're too lazy and/or ethical to steal the data from Japanese sites, or because they don't have level 66+ north americans submitting this sort of info.

You cannot go Impaction -> Liquification -> Fragmentation.
                          Yes you can.

                          Anyway:

Every level 1 weaponskill has an element corresponding to it. These being:

                          Darkness
                          Earth
                          Water
                          Ice
                          Lightning
                          Wind
                          Fire
                          Light

And each of these elements has an EFFECT that correlates with them.

                          Darkness - Compression
                          Earth - Scission
                          Water - Reverberation
                          Ice - Induration
                          Lightning - Impaction
                          Wind - Detonation
                          Fire - Liquefaction
                          Light - Transfixion

                          i.e. Combo: Impaction
                          Fast Blade: Scission
                          Double Thrust: Transfixion

However, many level 1 skillchains have more than one element/effect.

In these cases, there is a Primary effect, Secondary Effect, and sometimes an Auxillery/Third effect.

i.e. Red Lotus Blade: Liquefaction / Detonation

Sidewinder: Reverberation / Transfixion / Detonation

This means that it checks skillchain compatibility of these weaponskills in order from Primary -> Secondary -> Auxillery. If a chain cannot be made with Primary, it checks secondary and so on.

That is it for level 1 weaponskills. As for level 2...

These weaponskills are advanced in that they each have 2 or more elements in an amalgum effect. i.e...

                          Arching Arrow: Fusion
                          Full Break: Distortion
                          Shark Bite: Fragmentation
                          Swift Blade: Gravitation

                          Now, for a simple chart:

                          Weaponskill1 > Weaponskill2 [ Created Effect ]
                          Liquefaction > Impaction [Fusion]
                          Induration > Reverberation [ Fragmentation ]
                          Transfixion > Scission [Distortion]
                          Detonation > Compression [Gravitation]

                          Gravitation > Distortion [Darkness]
                          Distortion > Gravitation [Darkness]
                          Fusion > Fragmentation [Light]
                          Fragmentation > Fusion [Light]

I have never seen Impaction -> Liquification -> Fragmenation produce Light.

I wont even start to try and explain the A,B,C,Default way because there are a few things I'm still not 100% on... However there are no primary/secondary to a weaponskill. It'll only confuse the situation more when you try to figure it out.
