Then you are casting too late. The only thing that will get a mobs attention faster than Dia is Jump.

dia is slower than provoke since it has a 1 second cast time. provoke is instantaneous (provoke even beat the RDM with chainspell on both were JP)

        for pullling i think its:

        Monk Chi Blast
        Beastmaster Charm
        Warrior Provoke
        Mage Dia

in order of fastest, monks and bestmaster always seem to out pull the others as far as i've seen

It doesn't matter weather or not you and the Japanese player have the same marco setup, you WILL still lose. They see the monster before you do because they are closer to the server. The command(s) you enter that are sent to the server will be slower, do you understand how many routers it takes for the data packets to get there? compared to a Japanese player that are very close to the servers.

doku, do you understand what those numbers in the upper right mean? I normally have a ping of 200 on ffxi. That means 200 milliseconds required to send a packet from here to there then here again. How much faster do you think the japanese are? Hint: You can't go below 0.

            (Edit: upper right, not left.)

Hmmm, you guys are forgeting the most wonderful spell known as Flash (PLD 37, WHM 43). It is faster than Dia or Provoke.

Provoke is the fastest, followed by RDM with AF hat and Dia.

Isn't Jump faster than Provoke? And charm is about the same speed I think.

Poison is also faster than Dia, IIRC.

And there is also Stun  which is TOTALLY unfair.

I agree, Provoke is faster than Dia in my experience. The advantage to using Dia is the range. Dia can hit targets that are further away than Provoke can. I haven't seen Flash yet so I can't comment on that.

Holy, stun, flash are all instant cast with long range... dunno how you possibly beat that >.>

In some camps you don't want long range. For example, with Mee Deggi provoke will only catch the mobs you want and a rare crab. With dia/flash/stun/holy you'll catch a lot more crabs and the occasional yagudo. So provoke is better in this case.

With casted spells you also have the problem of LoS. Provoke/charm are a lot more forgiving about something being around a corner than spells are. That's another problem in smaller campers.

Charm itself has its own problems. Most of these camps you'll have monsters around that you can charm. If you don't have release it can be dammed annoying to get rid of that brand new pet you didn't want.

I think I know the trick you're talking about.

It was posted here before I believe, not in this section of the forum, but some other. The "trick" I'm reffering to is definetly not a bug, so we might be thinking of two different things.

Well this topic went a lot more then I thought it would, and the provoke/dia/flash, server lag, etc talk leads me to another question...

What do you think would be my chances would be of actually snaggin Argus? I got a few trusted people who are willing to camp it with me, so maybe a general idea, or maybe an approximate time frame of how long you think i'll be there...

Any other info would be truely appreciated as I plan to camp Argus no matter what, just tryin to get all the info I can ahead of time.

just so u know... Holy is the fastest casting magic (0.75 sec), provided u don't have a Fast Cast ability. Dia, Poison, and Flash r all 1 sec casting magics, so slower than Holy. neverthesless, Provoke is faster...

btw, Holy used to be faster-casting w/ twice the range. but it's been changed to what it is now.
