Stupid magicked skull!

Argh, I'm level 18, been hunting in valkurm since about 13, and still have only gotten the magicked skull needed for the subjob quest once, and someone else in my party won the lot that time.

Anyway, I got three high level japanese players who were willing to help me (they were very nice ) to bring me into the Gusgen mines and hunt for a skull there. After about 3 hours of hunting and 50+ ghouls killed, they still didn't drop the damn skull.

My question is, what's the easiest/fastest way to get that damn magicked skull? I really don't wanna be one of those people who's at level 24 and still doesn't have the items for the subjob quest. Any help would be appreciated!

Gusgen for sure...
Dunno why it's been taking you so long to get a skull in Gusgen, I went there with 1 Lv.35 RDM and we got the skull nice and quick.

in gusgen i have gotten 5 magicked skulls in a hour....and i would help u but ur on a foreign server ='(....the 3 JP's must of had the worst luck lol....ive helped 10-12 people on my server.....(i randomly msg'd them)........i am abnormally lucky tho -_-;

Could it maybe be that I haven't "received" the subjob quest in Selbina yet, and thus the ghouls wouldn't drop that item unless someone in the party had the quest as "incomplete" or something?

I have the other 2 items, but i never spoke to the NPC to start the quest yet.

That's just a random idea...

like, would ghouls still drop the item if everyone in the party that killed it already has a subjob?

no you can get the skulls anytime.....ive gotten a bunch during the eco warrior quest for bastok.....the people who helped u were just really unlucky..

get someone around 30 to help u (1 melee should be fine to solo those ghouls with no linkage)....it will drop alot faster especially with /thf at 15

I didn't get my skull till level 21 MNK, where two nice JP players escorted me and other people to Gusgen and got us the skulls.

But.. recently (at around lv32 WHM) I went to Selbina. There was a ghoul in my way in Valkurm, so I killed it... guess what it dropped? Hehehe.

You're doing it correctly, just being unlucky.

The skull drop is highly random. I've seen only 2 drop after 6 hours, i've seen 2 drop in 30 min.

The best thing to increase your odds is to get a THF of L15 or higher for Treasure Hunter.

Get a theif in your team.

A nice JP lvl 30 guy helped me and my friends out finding rare items for the subjob in Mhaura. Our lvl 18 Thief in our team pulled the items out very quickly as the lvl 30 took the pain.
