what are the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Well, they have some different missions but mostly its which ever place you like more.

They do offer a ring if you pick the right race for country (humes/bastok, elven/sandoria, etc) however its not THAT important since there are a number of better rings available that arent to tough to get a little later. Dont let the ring make the decision for you!

Yea most likely whichever place you want. Im going to be a tarutaru starting in Windurst because the magic there is a little cheaper then the other kingdoms...who knows maybe ill start in sandoria where most of my ls is starting.

Personal Preference

It's all up to you. Decide on where you would like to start. Every city is beneficial in diff ways.(Synthesizing Guilds, etc.) If you are Elvaan and start in San d'Oria, you do get a ring. If you start in Bastok and are Galka or Hume, ring as well. Same goes as Windurst if you are Mithra or Taru.

If you are starting a character that will be mostly magic based, windurst will be most beneficial to you. The Conquest Point items (cp) that you can get are mostly geared toward these classes. Don't expect to be a tank, start in Windurst, and expect awesome items.

Bastok and San d'Oria are for the most part on the same level. If you are a melee or tank geared character, start in either of these cities. Most if not all cp items are very beneficial to these classes.

This is just a little bit of info in helping make your decision. Hope it helps.
