Here's the amusing thing. On another forum, there was this big conversation when a few older players were returning to the game, and they were like "Boo fast leveling! Slow old style was the best, yo!" and I was like "[Every argument I've made of late.]" and they were all "Get out of here dude, you don't know! It was the best! Boo to new!"
And then they finally got installed and logged in and started playing and were like "Wow, fast exp is great! I'm having so much fun, you guys!" and I was like "Wat." and they were all "Get out of here dude, you don't know! This is the best! Yay to new!"

I think most expect the game to be as fun as it was the first time playing. But there is a big difference between starting with 4 friends and scraping enough money together to afford a linkshell and starting a new account when you know exactly where to go or having a lv95 run you through everything.
Most of the fun was exploring new areas and praying that high level mobs wont aggro you. Experiencing things like shadow lord with 18 people lost in a castle is going to be more fun then just running in there and 2 shotting him. I think if a old player just takes the time to do old content and dosent burn him self out to fast the game can be enjoyable again.

If I've noticed anything about the people who up and decide to start playing the game these days... one of a few things winds up happening:
1: You want to play because you saw a box set in Gamestop/Bestbuy/EBgames/Amazon etc and thought... oh cool, a Final Fantasy game that's online, I never heard of that. Then... doing research you figure out (or sometimes dont) that the game has been around for over 9 years and think to yourself "Dayum.... gotta get me some-a-that!". The natural course of events brings you to this or any number of other forum communities or wikis where you learn more about the game.
The people that fall into this category either say "Fuck that... thats too in deapth and way too much work... I'm gunna go play halo at Joe's house" or they say "I think I'll actually give this a try".
2: Those of you who opt to try the game continue your time on the forum you picked (or dont if you dont like to research games and just go in blindly swinging). You then install the game... at which point... another "Dayum" is in order when you realize you cant just.... play.... you have to update for 9 hours or more in some cases. After you start playing... you either decide QUICKLY that you cant or dont want to figure it out and rage-quit... or you stick it out and try to get your footing in the game.
3: If you've stuck it out, you'll either last a week.... a month... or you stay forever. Those are the intervals... and about 80-90% of the people who made it this far fall into the first 2 options.
4: If you last over a month... 2.... 3... 4... a year, then you're clearly hooked in enough and have become familiar with the game to the point where you can confidently understand what's going on and begin actively working toward in-game and end-game events. Now-a-days its not surpising if you're already at or very close to lvl 90 (95) by this time... only ever held up by limit break quests.
OR...
5: You're not new and you're returning to the game after X years/months away from it... in which case you'll likely return, recap your level and maybe your skills, participate in some of the new events and expansions and then proceed to either quit again (AND THIS TIME FOR GOOD, LOOK IM GIVING AWAY ALL MY GIL!!! IM SERIOUS THIS TIME!!!) or you stick it out for a much longer time.
6: You're returning from your ???'th break from the game... and you immediately realize that the last time you quit... you were retarded and geve everything you had away... and begin beating yourself over the head trying to remember WHY. You then either reroll a new character and start over (i still dont get why some people do this) or you deal with it and start going out to reclaim all your lost crap.Leave a comment:

It's not you... but it's also not a wave. Back when I had my thread for new and returning players up... I got a request from a BRAND NEW PLAYER TO THE GAME... on nearly a daily basis. It's more of a constant flow.Originally posted by Takelli View PostLeave a comment:

Old player returning
Hey everyone! Im another player wanting to come back to FFXI
I played on Valefor for a few years and quit in 2007 as Meatster. I quit after alot of my old friends left and staying up late to camp HNMs were just to much when coupled with college.Heard the game has gotten easier at the lower levels and things like CoP and RotZ are soloable so I had to give it another try.
Any advice on what server to join or can anyone point me in a good direction for a linkshell? Any help would be really appreciated. I spent most of my time powerleveling people in valkurm anyway lol
I did look through the past threads but many links were broken or not working.
