Hey yall, I am new to FFXI, I just bought FFXI: Vana'diel Collection 2008 at gamestop.com (the download version) So, it is going to take awhile before I will be able to play. I heard about this website threw google with trying to find information about the game, and I just thought that I would say hello! Anyway, I have a few question's that I would like to be answered because I am a little confused on certain things.

1) I am from the US, and I was wandering how many people from the US play? and at what times durring the day?

2) What servers are mostly populated, and when are most people active? (Not just the US)

3) Does anyone have like any "Race" and "Job" guides that I could look at to figure out what race and job that I would like to play?

4) I cant think of any names, if some people can give me some clues onto how they figured out there characters name I would really be greatfull. (I was thinking of going Mystiqsoul or something along those lines not to sure now though.)

5) I heard there is a program that can take really good screen shots, I am from WoW, and I have used some "illegal" ones, and some standard ones, but I cant seem to find anything that looks good. So, if anyone knows of any program that would be really helpful!

6) Is there anything that I should know about FFXI that I have not yet asked about or anything?

Lots. And, all times. We have a mixture of day prime- and night prime-time people, and if that's not enough, people from every inhabitable continent are generally on. Most servers will have 1000-2000 on at any given time.

Rumors are Odin is the most populated, but servers are generally about the same as far as populations go. See also: http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/new...l-servers.html You'll find 2 primary times, NA primetime and JP primetime -- 5-7pm for each timezone. There's a good chance your normal playtime will run into at least one of these.

3) Does anyone have like any "Race" and "Job" guides that I could look at to figure out what race and job that I would like to play?

It has a random name generator. You can also use Character Name Generator for the heck of it, among many other name generators available online.

Plenty of US players to be had in FFXI. They play the same times as any other US player pretty much would - afternoon and evenings are when you find more US players.

Don't pick a server for its population, please, and especially don't pick Odin. We're full, thanks, no more. I don't know if its even possible for anyone else to join Odin. Bahamut might be your next best bet.

Race doesn't matter in FFXI that much, its a very slight difference in EXP PTs and only affects some races signifigantly at endgame. Any race can play any job, pick the race you like.

As for jobs, rather than make your decisions on main job now, best advice anyone can give you is take one of the following paths to 30:

BLM to 18 > WHM to 30
MNK to 18 > WAR to 30.

Then go and unlock all the jobs. Play them, see what you like and then research further into how to play them well. Lots of guides on each job forum here, feel free to check them out.

Whether you go mage or melee, you'll have at least one subjob almost completed for any job if you pick to level WHM or WAR furthest first.

Pick what you like, just don't try any variation of "Sephiroth" or "Trunks" or any popular FF or anime character, for that matter. People learn to be wary of people with names like those.

If you want a FFXI-themed name:

Elvaan - Something french-sounding
Galka - AdjectiveNoun, Pick one adjective for first part of the name and then a noun. Like Sleeping Moose or Pathological Liar
Hume - They're Human, name them anything.
Mithra - just look em up on FFXIclopedia, they have all kinds of odd-sounding names, like Phub.
Taru-taru - something sing-songy like Chapa Cha (if male) or Shanana (if female). Or just name them after any food, that works, too.

5) Is there anything that I should know about FFXI that I have not yet asked about or anything?

• Don't Expect WoW, its not WoW.
• Read the manual
• Ask Questions
• Making gil is kinda hard starting out.
• Plenty of people out there willing to help if you're polite.
• Do the tutorial NPC quests.
• Don't beg for gil... major turnoff.

There's lots more, but those are some basics o.o/

Since everything else has been answered, I'll handle this one.

It's called Fraps. And it's not actually illegal or banworthy to use. Infact SE pretty much promoted it's use when they have their video contests at fanfest.

Everything else though, avoid like the plague.

In addition to Fraps, there's Clipper, which is free. The free version of Fraps doesn't include everything, but it's good enough for just screen shots.

There is almost no in-game help or information. The tutorial NPCs are a big help, but when it comes to doing quests, etc., you will almost certainly not understand what you need to do based on what the NPCs tell you. This game requires research outside of the game. Lots of it. Read, read, read, read, read. Use FFXIClopedia, search the forums.

Go here instead. That thread hasn't been updated well enough.

To set the background resolution to 1280x768, you set the appropriate registry keys to... wait for it... 1280 and 768! Or double those values, but I'm sure your calculator works as well as mine.

Actually, there are lots of quests and missions that tell you where to go next. That's why its so infuriating when people ask questions the NPC just answered. Its like people just mash X or Return to rush through the NPC conversation and don't read a damned thing.

When we do get the ones that are vague, that's because they're supposed to be. If NPCs always tell us exactly what we need to do, it's really not that adventurous, now is it?

A free utility for screenshots that doesn't only produce stupid files (BMP) is ScreenCap. It might be a better idea then Fraps or GameCam if all you want to do is take screenshots.

thank you, but now I need help finding my registration keys for the game the download went threw fine but I have searched my computer, and I have no clue ware the registration keys would be located at on my PC.

Registry files aren't directly accessible like a text file or word document. You need to use regedit.

That information should be included in the thread, if you read it.
