If you browse around the Summoner section of the forums, you'll find that /whm is pretty much the standard sub for SMN. It allows for a greater MP pool, and for smns to "cure tank" which is a role they must play from time to time. As some will also say /rdm is also viable.
The general concensus on /blm is No. Unlike previous older FF's (like, say FFIV) where one character was a super dmg dealer, FFXI doesnt work that way do to how subjobs function. By having a blm sub, all your attack spells are halved, as well as your skill in those lvls. Imagine being say, a lvl 50/25 smn/blm. All your elemental spells vs lvl 50+ mobs would act as if you were a lvl 25 blm. No lvl 25 blm in their right mind would try that because of lousy results. Healing magic doesn't work in quite the same way. After a certain lvl, Cure II does 90HP of healing, reguardless (+/- a few points depending on +mnd etc, but nothing huge). People want a smn to be able to cure, heal status ailments etc, not try to nuke a mob for crappy dmg.
