We all know that FFXI's graphics rock, but I felt the necessity to take it to the next level. So, I grabbed some .DATs, converted them to .MQOs, then converted that to .X, then converted that to .3DS, then imported the models in, and did some tweaking.
Now, these new models are much too complex to be renderable at gameplay speeds, but they are prettier to look at. I JUST got started on this Dragoon Relic, and I think he's lookin' pretty good. Here're some images I prepared for comparison purposes. They were both rendered at just about the same original resolution.
Ah, first up. Take a good look at the reformation of his nose and ears, as well as the corners of his shoulderpieces, and how much smoother the edges are, and I did a tiny bit of work on the textures as well. Looks like they decided to bastardize them for compression.
Next! Look at how the material I used for the armor caused the light to reflect off of the shoulderplate, making a hotspot if you will. Also, as you can see, his hair has been mesh smoothed to look like a head a bit more.
Though it's a pain in the butt, it's fun when it's done to look at it. I will eventually go BACK through the arduous conversion and put a model of a dude with a football jersey on in place of....the Gambison or something. I'll have some fun. I plan on doing more tomorrow once I finish up this one. I can't decide what I should do. Let me know what you'd like to see. Questions? Comments? Complaints?
