  • Lots of newbie questions.

A polite and selfless thing for me to do would be to hunt down each question one at a time and try seeing if they've already been answered, but I'm afraid I'll forget alot of them if I try that.

    So here goes:

Do items that grant experience bonuses stack? For instance if I have both a chariot and empress band active will I receive a 125% exp point bonus?

What other items give experience bonuses and how hard would they be to get ahold of?

This might sound stupid since the answer seems obvious but is a high delay on a weapon a good thing? I would think not since it would seem the higher the delay the longer it takes to attack.

If high delay is a bad thing is there a good standard delay to damage ratio to keep in mind while weapon shopping?

For instance if the delay to damage ratio is 10:1 I wouldn't want to buy a weapon with +3 damage and a 50 delay because the added damage wouldn't be worth the delay according to this hypothetical unfounded ratio. Does such an equation exist?

Finally: I would like some advice.

Should I hold off on leveling all my jobs till after I unlock my desired main profession, puppet master? My thinking is I should, that way I'll have plenty of low level jobs to go back to and level up giving my puppet plenty of time to raise and keep his own skills maxxed.

How often should I return home for signet? I think as soon as it runs out because I feel like a leach with out it, and conquest points seem very important.

I've been trying very hard not to be one of those irritating newbs that asks a million questions and then whines like a bitch when they don't get answers they easily could have found for themselves, but since its been months now and I'm having a hard time getting answers on my own I think its fair to ask now.

The anniversary band if you had not got one when they first came out and have been in FFXI over a month is the only other item. You can only hold chariot or empress bands, empress band is the better of the two.

You are right higher delay means the longer time it takes to attack, but also those weapons have higher attack so it balances out, haste/delay reduction/(/sam) hasso all lower delay for two handed weapons.

There is no real ratio to shop by IMO, but once you really get into the game you should know by using common sens.

Alot of people will farm and use the puppet in the form they use the least to skill up those abilities. I would recomend getting /whm, /war, /mnk all leveled before picking up pup tho.

Asking questions is fine as long as you listen, it shows you are trying to better yourself. Signet is fairly important for and melee with mp (drk, pld, blu) because they don't lose tp while resting. I personally like to keep signet up for the points unless you are soloing or a melee with mp it is not overally something you must have.

I'll leave the questions that only have a yes or no answer, as Sev has already gotten to those, and there's no point in repeating information.

Unless I am woefully mistaken, your puppet is only going to level when you have Puppetmaster as your main job. So there is no reason to delay leveling something else first, if you would like to level it up. You'll have plenty of time to raise your puppet's skills when you are leveling PUP.

You're right. It's just good sense to refresh it regularly. Ideally you'll remember to refresh it before it wears, so you don't have to miss out on valuable conquest points or crystals. As you do your rank missions, it will last longer and longer, and you won't have to get it renewed anymore.

Honestly, as long as you ask questions politely, you'll have no problems getting answers. Heck, even if you ask impolitely, you're still likely to get them.^^ The bulk of the FFXIO community is more than happy to answer questions. It's one of the reasons we post here. So don't be afraid to ask when you have them.

        Re: Lots of newbie questions.

thanks both of you. Especially since I wont waste my conquest points getting both exp rings, and I'm relieved to know the signet will actually increase its duration as I rank up.

The rest of your answers ,naturally, are also appreciated but I was hoping some one might have actually done the math on that damage to delay ratio thing.

Oh well. I've been told its better if I focus on accuracy over damage anyway.

Oh, I'm sure someone has done the damage to delay ratio math. That person just isn't me. Check for threads by forum regular Armando. He's really good at that sort of thing, and just may have already posted about it at some point.^^

Well to be honest most weapons have a dps (damage per second) rating. Forgot about it when i first posted, the higher the dps the more dot (damage over time). Higher base damage on a weapon will provide for higher weapon skills.

            DPS is listed here

Select type of weapon then it sorts by level. Dps is the ratio you were looking for.

And accuracy has a cap, I don't know the target acc for a puppetmaster thru the levels I will see if I can't get a target per 10 levels for you. Most of the acc/att build is messing around with it for a bit.

Protip: Thanks button makes ppl you. Murphie and I agreed on that one. AIM FTW!

I'll tackle this one since no one addressed it yet - experience point boost effects do not stack - the active effect stays on. The only way you could test this would be to have an anniversary band and an empress/chariot band though. I know people who've tried it, and they've lost a charge because of their curiosity (thankfully it was their emp band charge).

It depends. If the weapon has a higher damage rating, or stat boosting effects, it could be worth the slower swing.

Just curious.. have you played Magic: The Gathering before on a serious competitive level? I'm not kidding..

Again it depends.. if that's the route you want to go then do it, but I wouldn't recommend limiting yourself to one path in the game. Also Puppetmaster seems to be misunderstood as to its place in parties and endgame. I can't figure this out either - I've partied with PUPs a few times and they're fantastic DDs and they tank pretty well too. The job is insanely flexible.

No offense but you didn't really help. lol.

I appreciate the effort though, and no I don't and probably never will play MtG in any kind of a serious manner. I suck at it to much lol.

I love MTG! Anway, you'll want the Empress Band as soon as possible, not Chariot. First thing you will want to do is find the ladder of jobs to get your main to 75 without delay. For example: If you wanted to be a RDM, you'd do something like this: BLM to 18 < WHM/BLM to 37 < RDM/WHM to 75. But, you will need to research what you want to be and how to get there on your own. You could probably find it on this site. Look for "SubJob" and "Puppetmaster".

                      Re: Lots of newbie questions.

You cannot directly compare Hand-to-Hand (H2H) weapons to non-H2H weapons.

Here is a comparison of a WAR/MNK at Lv9 with Brass Knuckles and Inferno Axe:

Brass Knuckles and Martial Arts I
Total Delay = Martial Arts Base Delay + Weapon Delay
                      Total Delay = 400+96 = 496

Delay in Seconds = Total Delay / 60
                      Delay in Seconds = 496 / 60 = 8.27

                      Damage Per Hand = H2H Skill * 0.11 + 3 + Weapon Damage
                      Damage Per Hand = 25 * 0.11 + 3 + 4 = 9.75 = 9 (FFXI drops the decimals)

Damage per Second = Damage Per Hand x 2 / Delay in Seconds
                      Damage per Second = 9 x 2 / 8.27 = 2.18 DPS

                      Inferno Axe
                      Total Delay = Weapon Delay = 504
                      Total Damage = Weapon Damage = 23
                      Damage Per Second = Weapon Damage / (Weapon Delay / 60) = 23 / (504/60) = 2.74 DPS

The Inferno Axe is clearly better, and you also gain additional attack and accuracy while using a 2H weapon. Also WAR has an A+ skill rating in Great Axe and a D skill rating in H2H which determines the cap on your skill at any level. A higher skill cap gives you more attack and accuracy which gives you more damage and a higher hit-rate.
