      God I hope so.

What annoys me the most is losing sound effects for no good reason. I'm one of those guys that uses sounds as reference to know when mobs do things or when someone uses a spell (since I have some things filtered from chat log), so losing sound effects really bugs me.

Like the last 2 lvls or so as a BRD in Mount<tab> sound effects went missing from time to time and that really made timing my pulls more annoying than necessary.

Sound quality improvement would probably be more dependent on improving the codec it was recorded with. I don't believe any sound related improvements will be as drastic as the possible fixes related to nVidia 6 and higher cards.

I believe loosing sounds effects is a different issue.

Ya it is, but hopefully it will improve both.

And with a sound upgrade they can tweak already existing sound effects so they sound less PS2-ish. Because I (of course) blame the PS2 for that too.
          ------------------------------------------
I think it has to do with the limited amount of sound effects the game can handle at the same time, so in enviorenments heavy on sound effects (like lava + wind + others) it can push the number of sound effects over the limit so the game simply skips some effects.

I'm not really sure about it though, but giving the game has a sound effect limit option on the config makes me think it's something like that.

raydeus: I believe things like POLUtils and such can increase the amount of simultaneous sounds. I never really played around with it, since my PC is old as the mountains and the sound card is about as complex as an abacus, but there's no reason you couldn't try it.

DX9 might also offer some improved graphics, especially effects, if SE chooses.

For some nice comparison shots of DX8 and DX9 in HL2, take a look at http://gear.ign.com/articles/567/567437p2.html

Notice the improved lightning effects, much more realistic water, and other things.
