  • Shimmering white lines occasionally appear

I didn't know what board to post this on, since it has nothing to do with setup and installation...and it's too specific for the computers section

I get these weird shimmering white lines occasionally...usually on grey backgrounds...usually between polygons (the seems or whatever)...and sometimes between my name and the linkpearl graphic...and I was wondering if you guys had a fix

    Anyways, my computer stats

    Windows 2k
    Athlon XP 2500 Barton
    Asus AX7VX-X Motherboard
    Kingston PC3200 512mb DDR Ram
    ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
Western Digital 120GB 8mb Hard Drive
    Soundblaster Live! MP3+
    Built-In Network Adapter
    USB PS2>PC Adapter

I currently have anti-aliasing set to 6x and the filtering one to max...and the rest of the settings are "Application Preference" or "High Quality"...and all of the FFXI config settings are maxed (no resolution registry tweaks)

Oh, and I checked out this thread ( http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/sho...threadid=26128 ) and the only thing on that list I have is...
8.) You have not installed/enable any remote control programs such as pcAnywhere or Terminal Services

ONly thing I can think of is this. When you say maxed, alot of people thing "High compression" is the best graphic setting in FFXI. Actually the best setting is "No compression". Just a though, some people see "high" and automatically thing high quality.

No, I have it set to no compression

Unlike a lot of NA players, I can read :p *

*Ignore my insult against NA players, just general frustration with the stupidity of some people in the game.

No I agree, but I think everyone is dumb. Not just NA players hehe.

I have a similar problem on my work computer. It's the monitor that causes mine. I hit it and it fixes it hehe.

I would suggest the basic fixes. Remove/update your vid drivers. Update Direct X, do a file check on ffxi through playonline ( forget where the option for this is) to check for corrupted files.

Hmmm, ill try to think of more heh. Maybe even turn down some of the graphics settings and see if it still does the same thing.

My drivers are up to date (with an uninstall using the special catalyst uninstall utility before hand)
Everything else checks out fine. This has been happening ever since day one, it's nothing major, just kind of an annoyance.

and as for graphic settings...yeah, I should...but I was hoping someone came into the same problem.

My guess is either FFXI dosen't work right with those graphic settings using an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro...

or maybe it's my AGP drivers from VIA (the 4 in 1 driver pack)...I heard the 49's were no good and I should go back to the 47's...but I honestly dont know how to uninstall the 49's successfully to go back to the 47's.

              Oh, and Hi Santa!

I sometimes see lines goin across my whole screen. But i knew it was overheating, so i jus threw off the side panel and its been fine. Put it back on, and its overheating in 10 minutes

                    Try turning on V Snyc.

The white lines are called "tearing" and usually turning on vsync takes care of it.

Where's this vsync? I've got a 9600pro and occasionally get this "tear" also. I'm assuming this is under the ATI properties in the sys tray? (I'm at werk now, so I can't check :dead: )
                      Alright.... who farted?

VSync totally solved it by the way

I dont get the "tears" (so that's the term?) anymore.

                        Thank you

I had that at first too. Iput my background resolution to 2048x248 and I haven't had them since. Too bad I still get those weird lines or "spikes" that sometimes shoot our from characters. I think that's what the newest patch did to ATI card users.

                            Yeah, that didn't fix it

It seemed to have worked...but I hadn't traveled through Gustaberg (which is mostly grey) to check...
