Im still having such a hard time deciding what jobs to use. Im certain my first job will be thief, but other than that MNK WHM BLM RDM BST RNG DRK all sound so great. i know i wont have the time to level them all because i have a lot going on in my life and cant play more than 10 hours a week if that. One thing that really makes me want to sub BLM are the poison spells and drain. i was just wondernig how good of spells they are, how much damage do they do, and with drain hom much do you get back. thanks pancakes!

10 hours a week... bout same as me and I'll tell you one thing: You'll be behind
Just level your thief and switch to an advanced job and stick to it if u wanna get up to the higher levels. Basically, you'll have been able to level a job to 30, switch to adv, and bring it up to 30 again by the time the people who start at the same time but play hardcore get to level 60 (or damn close) on their main and 30 on at least 2 subs. (me and drako, perfect example  )
If you plan on starting w/ thief, I recommend you also level to either Monk or Warrior later, because they make good subjobs for thief, and vice versa. Thief is also an awesome sub for DRK, but people in their ignorance tend to not invite DRKs when they aren't subbed war  In all honesty, poison and drain spells aren't that useful. BLM's don't even use poison cuz it doesn't really do much damage, and the only thing that I (DRK) use it for is to lure monsters over (cuz it's got a nice range
). As for drain... don't see it used very often. Can't say it's very useful, what with white mages and all.
RNG is for people who play alot. It's hell expensive. Basically you spend a few thousand gil per hour on ammo. Unless you have a high level job getting easy $ to support it, you won't be able to use RNG to it's full potential.
BST is only for people who wanna be different and alone. When you join PTs, you don't charm animals cuz they'll just reduce the EXP you get and piss off aggressive monsters. I hear you can solo totetote's with them tho, so... Yeah only if you like being alone.
RDM is a good starting job. A little bit of everything. You pick rdm and find which aspect you like better, then u switch to another one (or some loyalists level it to 60 and get AF
). You could try levelling RDM first if you want a taste of both classes of magic and fighting abilities without spending too much time levelling different classes.
DRK is awesome [says me
], but only if you start out WAR. First of all, the quest is hell to get through if you don't have a high level war because it's the only job that can complete the quest. You CAN switch to level 1 WAR and complete it, but it would take you forever. Also, even after the quest is completed, you would have a hard time finding a PT subbing anything else. (not to say that only DRK/WAR is useful, but a lot of people are ignorant and tend to think that way  ) Even as DRK/WAR, I usually have to make my own PT's.
WHM is helpful for soloing even if you don't plan on being a full-time white. If nothing else, you should level it to 7 (won't take too long) to sub it so you can solo a new job up a lot faster until level 15, then you can switch to your real sub and join the PT's in valkurm.
Anyways, just a few tips there. Hope It helps

drain is pretty useless for BLM. you spend 52 MP and normally drain less then 100 (sometimes only 10 drained) it's not worth the MP for that spell. Aspil (MP drain) in the other hand is more useful. 10 MP spent and if you drain the right enemy you can get up to 60-70 MP back.
BLM has tons other useful spells tho. the super useful desion which warp yourself to home point, desion 2 that warps anyone else to thier home point, escape that warps the whole party out of dungeons, etc. they are also the only job that can use "ga" series for attacking spells. wanna serprise some newbie? call 60 enemy to you and cast aerogo2. woop and there you are standing on top of countless corpses. There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot,
