size
id say most areas are at least 1-3 square miles but some are 4-6, each region has around 4-6 areas, each of the 3 main continents has about 5-6 regions, plus you have other islands not with the main countries, about 3-4 i think which have 1-2 regions on them. And jeuno smack in the middle not with anyone. It's pretty big, id say way bigger than the world in morrowind, but thats just me.

I'd say that in terms of raw area, it can't reall compete with EQ, but beats DAOC. In terms of useable area, as in area that's not just there for the sake of being big, then I'd say FFXI, based on my experience, ranks pretty high.
As for the comparison to morrowind... err, no. No game out currently can even remotely compete with Morrowind, except maybe daggerfall, which had probably the largest world of all time. In daggerfall, we're talking 3-4 hours of real time to walk between two simple towns.

I think ffxi is big but they are conected to alot of area's its a bit like never winter nights each end you need to load to the next area wich is a bit disapointed cause dark age of camelot had a more biger and wider area then ffxi - Daoc - each realm is one area in its whole - while ffxi is devided to like 30 seperate area's wich you need to load evrytime..

All you guys think the areas you see such as khazaam, jenuo, windurst, san, bastok and the areas wround it displayed in the world maps are all the maps in the game. WHat about all the dungeons? There are tons of underground dungeons in the game many that I still need to explore.

ive never played daggerfall atma, so you're probably right. I said bigger than morrowind because alot of the mountains in morrowind were so steep that it was either impossible to walk up them or just too time consuming to try to cut through them (yeah i know you can fly later in the game). Maybe flight was the reason, but the only mountains you cant climb(that ive found) in FF are the walls at the edges of the area. FF just seems to have more usable area to me (not to mention a more realistic landscape), just my 2 cents.
thats it, not trying to start an arguement.

From a technical standpoint, zones are far superior to seamless worlds. While a little bit of immersiveness is lost, the system of distinct zones allow you to use more detailed textures, have more items on screen, and overall yields a much greater sense of realism to the game. Personally, I'll sacrifice 10 seconds of load time for better looking content overall.Originally posted by Cathy

DAOC's world looked nice, but the areas in that game really got bland over time, especially the roads and grass..
Ultimately it boils down to user preference, but I'm just saying there are reasons to go with both approaches. Obviously, I prefer zones. YMMV.
