  • Ozy's Leathercrafting guide for modern times

Okay, there's a lot of guides out there, sure, but
prices have changed alot since I did the early levels,
and even more since most of the guides out there were
written. This guide is being written in May 2006, after
the TOA expansion has been out long enough for price
changes cause by it to settle down. I will come back and
edit it should there be more big changes with the
upcoming updates. I'll try to keep away from specific
prices, because they will differ from server to server,
but likely, they'll relate to each other in a similar
way. I am on Valefor and currently a 91+2 tanner.
Anytime the gap between your level and the item you
desire to synth is over 5, I use advanced support and I
    suggest you do the same.
Also, I suggest regularly looking at this website: http://www.titanictus.com/tools/guild/ and anytime you see an item listed that you can get skill off of, MAKE IT and bazaar it in the guld, it WILL sell, you can even mark it up.

    0-2
    Sheep Leather
Sheepskin + Distilled Water + Windurstian Tea Leaves
    Crystal: Dark
Notes: You'll get used to me saying this, but save your
    leathers, I know I wish I did.

    2-4
    Sheep Wool
    Sheepskin*2
    Crystal: Wind
Notes: This is one of the few synths that sells well and
you will not need later, go nuts.

    4-7
    Rabbit Mantle
    Rabbit Hide*5 + Grass Thread
    Crystal: Earth
Notes: Try and buy the hides at the guild, but you won't
be devastated if you have to get it from AH, though stay
away from Jeuno for these. Send these to a mule and
flood the AH and bazaar them and you'll be amazed at how
    well they sell.

    7-11
    Solea
    Sheep Leather*2
    Crystal: Wind
Notes: You saved your leathers right? I specifically
remember saving up for weeks to buy 2 stacks of leathers
for 11k each, hehe. This is very unprofitable, so if you
can do better on another synth, go for it, and try to
synth them on a day where they are a GP item.

    11-14
    Lizard Cesti
    Cesti + Lizard Skin
    Crystal: Earth
Notes: Buy the cesti at the weapons store in south
sandy. These don't sell too well, but if you want and
you have alot of free mule space, store them for later.

    14-21
    Dhalmel Leather
Dhalmel Hide + Distilled Water + Windurtian Tea Leaves
    Crystal: Dark
Notes: Feel free to start these earlier. They are good
profit and one of the few leathers you might not use all
    of the ones you craft.

    21-24
    Bugard Leather
Bugard Skin + Distilled Water + Windurstian Tea Leaves
    Crystal: Dark
Notes: There isn't much use for these, you can try to
sell them, but it takes along time. I made them simply
because the skins were so cheap the loss was negligable.
You could try to syny any number of armor pieces, but
you'll lose more than on this synth.

    24-31
    Parchment
    Sheep Leather + Rolanberry
    Crystal: Dark
Notes: I remember when I did this you could buy the
leathers off the AH and about break even, but nowadays
if you don't want to lose money you're probably gona
have to craft em, which will mean a tidy profit.

    31-35

    Ram Leather
Ram Skin + Distilled Water + Windurstian Tea Leaves
    Crystal: Dark
Notes: The skins can be hard to find on AH these days,
though they are not overpriced, at least on my server.
The guild gets down to about 1k a skin, though with
recent prices you could buy them for 4k each and still
profit off them. Feel lucky, it used to be that you'd
use them all later on while leveling. (also feel free to
    start these earlier than 31)

    35-39
    Wolf Gorget
    Cotton Thread + Wolf Hide
    Crystal: Earth
Notes: Now starts the long trek of making gear that no
one wants. Most of the time it will just be making the
gear that will give you the lowest loss. Wolf hides are
cheap as they aren't used for anything useful, and
cotton threads can be gotten cheaply or by desynthing.

    39-49

    Ram Mantle
    Ram Skin + Wool Thread
    Crystal: Ice
Notes: These will actually sell sometimes and can be GP
items, so use the link above. A 10 level gap can cause
alot of breaks, even with support, but even after breaks
it'll cost you less than anything else you could make at
this level. However, if you have a few extra bucks to
invest, you could make Buffalo Leather, which also caps
at 49, with a moderate profit, but big losses from
    breaks.

    49-58
    Catoblepas Leather
Catoblepas Hide + Distilled Water + Windurstian Tea Leaves
    Crystal: Dark
Notes: Dear GOD I wish this synth was around when I came
through, I did these levels with raptor skins aplenty.
These, like bugar leathers, are mostly pointless,
however people will sell the skins in large quantities
on the AH for very cheap. Sell the leathers at NPC cause
no one is buying this crap.

    58-61

    Tiger Leather
Tiger Hide + Distilled Water + Windurstian Tea Leaves
    Crystal: Dark
Notes: This is the only leather that has become less of
a good synth since the old guides. When I did them Tiger
Hides were cheap, and their leathers were so worthless i
just made them all into Hard Leather Rings. You could do
that if you want (they cap at 62), but I'd suggest
    selling them at AH.

    61-63
    Beak Mantle
    Cockatrice Skin*2 + Grass Thread
    Crystal: Earth
Notes: These can be GP item, do whatever you want with
them. Cock skins are fairly cheap.

    63-71
    Coeurl Leather
Coeurl Hide + Distilled Water + Windurstian Tea Leaves
    Crystal: Dark
Notes: While a hefty profit can be made off these, even
when the skins are bought off the guild, you will need
every leather you make and more later on.

    71-72
    Ovinnik Leather
Ovinnik Hide + Distilled Water + Windurstian Tea Leaves
    Crystal: Dark
Notes: Just a cheap way to bridge a tiny bit of the gap
    until the next synth.

    72-80
    Manticore Leather
Manticore Hide + Distilled Water + Windurstian Tea Leaves
    Crystal: Dark
Notes: None of the old guides have this, that's for
sure, but by the time I got this high, all the other
materials for this level had skyrocketed but manticore
hide prices hadn't budged. If I recall correctly, I
could NPC the leathers and only lose about 3k per stack,
but I'd reccommend holding onto 4-5 stacks for later
    use.

    80-85
    Coeurl Mantle
    Coeurl Hide + Wool Thread
    Crystal: Ice
Notes: Grin and bear the loss here, it pales in
    comparison to the coming levels.

    85-87
    Coeurl Mask
    Coeurl Leather*2 + Faceguard
    Crystal: Earth
Notes: The faceguards can be bought in Bastok. Hope you
got a mule with plenty of Inventory space, cause you're
going to send everyone of these to it.

    87-88

    Ogre Mask
    Coeurl Mask + Manticore Leather
    Crystal: Earth
Notes: If you saved your Manticore Leathers, (or even if
you didn't) this will be a very cheap synth. Plus they
sell alot better than Coeurl Masks, if you're trying to
    AH them.

    88-89
    Coeurl Jerkin
    Coeurl Leather*2 + Sheep Leather
    Crystal: Earth
Notes: Again, send these all to a mule. I ended up
running out of them before I hit 90, and had to synth 12
    more.

    89-90
    Ogre Jerkin
Coeurl Jerkin + Manticore Leather + Undead Skin
    Crystal: Earth
Notes: I did this level before ToAU came out, and boy
was I pissed when undead skins dropped to 1-2k after I'd
    spent 20-40 per skin.

    90-91
    Errant Pigaches
Rainbow Thread + Undead Skin + Velvet Cloth + Ram Leather*2
    Crystal: Earth
Notes: These weren't cost effective before, but with
Undead Skin and Spider Web prices plummeting with the
release of the expansion, it's alot cheaper than the
alternative. All synths so far have not required any
subskill, but really, I hope you have clothcraft to 53.
Seriously, it's profitable to do it, and I
couldn't have imagined having to pay AH prices for Wool
Threads up til now, and in the upcoming synths. If you
don't have it, just skip this synth I guess.

Note: After this point you will ahve the
option to make alot of high end gear that doesn't sell
well. Let your friends know that you are in the higher
levels of a craft and will be willing to sign anything
in the 90's and maybe you'll get some skill off a
    commission item.

    91-95
    Tiger Mask
Tiger Hide*2 + Wyvern Skin + Wool Thread + Ram Leather
    Crystal: Ice
Notes: /cry. Well it had to happen someday, obscene
loss, that is. I desynth them to try and get something
back, cause they sure as hell aren't selling on AH.

    95-100
    Panther Mask
    High-Quality Coeurl Hide*2 + Wool Thread + Wyvern Skin + Ram Leather
    Crystal: Ice
Notes: I saw a guy HQ one while he was synthing. I
checked how much he sold it for later and it probably
payed for a few whole levels. I haven't HQed a skillup
item since I did Hard Leather Rings. :/ As a special
treat there is Gryffon Leather to be made! (you know
what it takes to make a leather by now, so don't ask)
While Gryffon Hides are hard to come by, on my server
they run about the same price as a Wyvern Skin, so
certainly a smaller loss than either Tiger Masks or
Panther Masks. The leathers cap at 97, make em whenever
you can find the hides after 90.

Well that's about it for the guide, I hope I haven't
bored you to death, I tend to be rather long-winded.
    Hope it helps you out!

Re: Ozy's Leathercrafting guide for modern times

    Nice guide, good job!

    My path:
0-2 Sheep leather (Save it all)
    2-4 Sheep Wool
    4-7 Rabbit Mantle
    5-11 Solea
9-14 Lizard Cesti (Watch the stock of these in Sandy, try to contact a high volume buyer as these are needed for Himantes)
11-21 Dhalmel leather (10 level gap, first 2 levels sucked)
21-31 Parchment (10 level gap, first 2 levels sucked)
31-36 Ram Leather (Use willow log recipie at 35, save it all for Cuir gear)
36-42 Cuir highboots (Sell on AH slowly, but for profit)
36-44 Cuir Trousers (Ingredient for many other synths, save if possible)
42-45 Cuir Bouilli (Sell on AH slowly, but for profit)
45-48 Ram Mantle (Farm rams, synth in the field, throw away if you need room as NPC price is low)
48-50 Himantes (Excellent skillups on these, 2.1 levels in 20 synths)
50-53 Raptor mantles (Bridge synth if Cat. leather is failing badly)
50-54 Raptor Trousers (If you saved any Cuir trousers, use them here, sell for profit on AH)
50-58 Cateboles Leather (Worst skillups in this craft, /slap the guild master)
54-61 Tiger Leather (2nd worse skillup synth, but profitable)
56-63 Beak Mantle (Cheap synth, NPC's for 1600)
57-64 Beak Trousers (If you saved anymore cuir trousers, make these as they sell on AH for profit)

I stopped at 60 since this isn't my main craft. If you don't rush through it, you should be able to profit all the way to 60.

Awesome guide. I've just taken up leathercraft as my main craft. Just about finishing up with ram leathers. I'm going to take the slow but cost effective route and try to farm all my materials if reasonably possible. Thus, the lack of rams appearing in either La Theine Plataeu or Konschatat Highlands.

Good guide, but it would be helpful to me to know which of these materials are best farmed, and which should be purchased at the AH or guildstore. I know it varies based on the level that you're at, but I wish I knew which of these materials were rare drops. I've been trying to start this craft myself and can't seem to find any sheep skins off of the wild sheep I've been killing.

I know you posted this in May but very nice job. Hard to find updated guides. I was looking for ideas besides himantes which require raptor skins which are going for 100k stack on seraph = no thanks. So thanks again.

oh and fyi people when someone posts their guide please don't reply with your own mini guide. this is their thread not yours.

why save your leathers when u can desynth at lv 5 i think leather bandanda to sheep leather and those are like 100-200 gil in the armor shops plus one lightning crystal = bout 400 gill which is less than you can sell them for in the first place. u can go buy 12 of these for about 2-3k and then 2-3k for crystals and sell the leather. and bazzam a quick profit
