    Try the Auction House.

Honestly... sorry to say this, and it might sound mean. But if you can't find the Auction House then you don't need to be fishing yet. I mean, even if you do manage to start fishing, how are you gonna sell your fish? NPC them? Not really a good source of money...

My suggestion is to try to figure out the basics of the game before you start crafting or fishing. Try reading one of the starting guides to help you get around. Just by leveling a character you can make some money.

              Re: Starting fishing

There's a fishing guild in Port Windurst. Buy a yew rod or fastwater fishing rod and get insect paste. Fish for moat carp in Windurst or in West Ronfare (or whatever it's called) near San d'Oria, but I suggest for you to fish them in Windurst so that you will not fish up a monster. On my server, they are 10k a stack in Windurst and they sell fast. If you don't have money, farm (meaning to hunt) beehive chips from bees (not the Bumble bees) in West or East Sarutabaruta OR Giddeus which is hidden in the far northwest in West Sarutabaruta. You will definitly need to know where the auction house is in your nation. That's where the money-making starts and that's what the whole economy depends on. If you are from other nations besides Windurst, I don't know what you can farm for money.

Fishing is boring unless you have a long attention span. I always fish while playing a mobile game or play a game system nearby to kill boredom time. You don't have to do this if you don't want to. Also, when you fish, notice the speed of the fishing bar AND the message that comes up. If you are really determined on fishing, then you will be fishing a lot and you will understand how everything works. Good luck starting the game!

It would help if we knew what city you are from. There is no way to travel to other cities easily at your point in the game. You would have to walk and there are alot of nasty monsters waiting to eat newbies trying to get places.
                  Thanks Kazuki.

                      Re: Starting fishing

Fishing is a great way to earn gil, but you need a little more experience with the game itself first.

#1 Talk to all the NPCs in the town. You can complete some quests without even having to set foot outside. Quests earn you gil or items. Quests also earn you fame which eventually reduces NPC prices for you.

#2 Get to know your town. Of great importance are the Auction House and various NPC vendors. In general, most things are cheaper from NPCs than from the Auction House.

#3 Before you head out to kill monsters for XPs, get Signet. This is available from one of the guards at each gate leading outside. Signet gives you the chance to get crystals as drops in addition to the normal drops. For now, just stack the crystals together (use the Sort function). When you get a set of 12, sell them on the Auction House. Crystals are used for synthing which comprises a large portion of Vana'diel's economy. Signet also earns you Conquest Points which you can use to buy special items from the guards.

#4 Check out sites like Titanictus and read up on fishing. Rods can and do break so research a little before you invest heavily in equipment. Fishing clothing (gloves, tunic, hose, boots) are recommended because they each add +1 to your fishing skill. But don't worry if you can't afford them yet. You can still fish just fine without them.

There's a lot to do in Vana'diel. Good luck and good fishing!

edit: Just noticed you're in Bastok. When you're fishing skill reaches 10, it'll be capped until you can turn in a "guild item" fish at the Fishing Guild located in Windurst. A different fish needs to be turned in every 10 fishing levels. It's a bit of a journey to get to Windurst at low levels, but it can be done. The good news is since this game has been around a while, there are many characters at higher levels. Chances are you'll meet someone via XP parties or linkshells who can help.

In Bastok Mines, Gelzerio sells Little Worms (fishing bait) when Bastok is in first or second place. He also sells some fishing rods, but they break fairly easily. Feel free to try them out, but be warned.

Well, like the others said, get to know the game first. Farming is the thing that everyone starts out with when they are new. To get from Bastok to Windurst, go to Gustaberg (I don't remember which one), Konschat Highlands, Valkurm Dunes, Selbina, take a boat to Mhaura, once you get there, go to Buburimu Pen., Tahrongi, East Sarutabaruta > go all the way south to see a entrance to Windurst not mentioned on the map or go to West Sarutabaruta to Windurst.

The easy way to go from Windurst from Bastok is ask for a Teleport-Mea from a lvl 37+ whm, but you need a crystal from the Tele-place, so when you go to Tahrongi, get the crystal at the Tele place. You should also get the crystal for teleport-Dem in Konschat. You'll need an escort though since you're new and inexperienced with the places in the game yet.

                          Bastok, Hmmm...

                          http://ffxi.somepage.com/npcdb/909

There's a guy in Bastok mines that sells yew / willow rods. I recommend little worms for bait starting off. Once you get the hang of how fishing works, insect paste might be a better bait option for profits.

Don't get discouraged if you break your rod or snap your line, these things are going to happen until you save up for a better rod like Halcyon and get some fishing skill accumulated.

Fish anywhere that looks like fresh water to begin with.

Thanks everyone, i've bought a yew rod and some insect bait and i am now looking for the nearest place that looks like fresh water to start with. I have also spoken to the guard by the north gate and obtained signet from him. I dont quite understanding the farming part yet but i'll figure it out soon enough you've all been a great help.

Kill stuff, sell what drops on the AH. Go out side and kill more stuff. Between levels 1-10/5 farming and leveling are pretty much the same thing.
