    What's your skill?

Where are you trying to fish?

What bait and rod are you using?

Same for me when I just started.

Go do a little research, a lot of FF fansites have a little fishing guide, they are if not all, but generally accurate.(My friend gave me a few, but I didn't save my favourite folder when I reinstalled windows)

Say you want Moat carp, you would have to go to Rabao for best result, because there are only crayfish and moat carp there(unless they changed that), and if you use insect balls(best bait for moat carp), crayfish won't even touch your bait. Rods are important too, I use Comp. rod myself, because it's hard to break.. though I did get better result with Fastwater or Single Hook.
Fishing gears do help the result too, if you can afford, or you do have it already.

Correct bait, rod, and location is really important as to what you want to fish.

EDIT: Even with the correct gears though, there is still chance that you would fail catching the fish, which can be the fish is too high lvl, or just out of luck on that one.

        O.k Thanks

I am using a clothespole and any bait i can possibly find i mostly use a fly lure, i'm fishing in either windurst or jueno, selbina (as i am trying to catch a greedie for a quest)

Ok, as far as the Fat Greedie goes you can't catch it using either a clothespole or fly lure. You'll need either :
          Bamboo Rod
          Carbon Rod
          Composite Rod
          Glass Fibre Rod
          Lu Shang's Rod
          or a Mithran Rod

          and either:
          Crayfish Ball
          Lugworm
          Minnow
          Robber Rig
          Rogue Rig
          Sardine Ball
          Sinking Minnow
          Sliced Sardine
          or a Worm Lure.

You'll have to be in the dock area to catch it. The area you need to pay to get in to. I used lugworms when I caught it, didn't take long so there's no need shelling out on expencive bait for it.

I tried using a clothespole for a while, I never did get many catches on it. If you want to use your clothespole you can catch Moat Carp with it. Just stick some insect paste on there and fish in San d'Oria or the rivers in Bastok. That should get you started. If you want to get a better rod, try a composite rod. There's few things that'll break it.

            Fishing Guide

Here are some good guides. You can use sites such as clanwind.com to help you find locations but they really dont provide information such as optimal rod/bait for the fish.

            or here:

            or here:

Actually picturing someone selecting random bait and rods in search of water to fish is amusing.

As for the fat greedies, lugworms work great. Get a Composite or Mithran rod now (Composite tends to be cheaper and more durable). That rod will last a longtime. Just don't play with it on the ferry with anything other than a sabiki rig or crayfish paste

if you want to catch anything, toss that clothepole now; the only thing it's got going for it is some unusual endurance. Carbon rods work well for low-level small fish, and is probably your best choice (just carry around 2 rods for when the first breaks); if you don't want your rod to break at all, carry around a composite rod and you should never have to buy another rod for quite some time. Just bear in mind that since it's a largescale rod you'll get "fish too small" logs reducing your catch rate.

(before you read this, pls dont think of me as a good fisher or anything  )
                yes, toss that clothespole
what i am using currrently (fishing skill lvl1 >.>) is a bamboo fishing rod and little worms, balls of insect paste, and lugworms. i started fishing in bastok sewer place and i got a decent amount of crayfish then of course there is the Zeruhn mines, i fished there to get more crayfish and the ocasional moat carp
and when i started fishing in winndy near the fishing guild, i got more luck.
i fished out many moat carps along with a few quss and a bastore sardine
but anyways, i would really sugest you stick with a bamboo rod for now untill your about lvl 5 or so or you have enough gil to get a lu shang fishing, since ive heard from many people that it is the best rod out there.
oh and buy some fishing gear too that helps
and take the advice that the fishing NPCs tell you about the fish it helps. you could also talk to that taru guy(forgot his name) and complete that quest. you simply need to get him a bastore sardine you can fish it but you can buy one from the shop. i would sugest trying to fish it though the gil i got for giving the fish wasn't even close to how much i paid for the sardine
                anyways, good luck fishing!

Edit:I learned a few days ago that a minnow lure is pretty trustworthy to me when im fishing near the guild and in windy waters also, im always low on gil so i dont rely on fishing gear....which means you will have a better chance if you are using fishing gear. And if you really want to get fish instead of items, i suggest you use the fishing apron. it lowers your chance of fishing up items but it doesn't add anything to your fishing stats like the rest of the gear does. again, goodluck fishing!
