76-83-ish:
Darksteel nodawas: Lose lots of gil but fast if you can invest a few mil
Thick Sollerets: Slow skill gain but almost 100% efficeint gill wise...minus any breaks you have
83-87:
Cellata: same as thick sollerets. May take time to sell through AH
87-90:
Generals Shield: i HIGHLY suggest you take time to get Goldsmithing to 53 because gold ingots will fund your progress
Adaman Ingot: TOTAL loss...simply because you will save all your ingots to make gully or misercords till 92
Past that is ...welll...expensive. actually unless you have 20 mil gil your smithing skill will come SLOW. I personaly invested 5 mil from 70-80 with about 2 mil left over.
My advice is TAKE YOUR TIME....if you rush you will become poorer than the poorest noob hoping to sell earth crystals for 500gill a stackSmithing 68
Weaving 60
Leather 30
Woodworking 73
Alchemy 50
Amazing what one will do to level Blacksmith in this game -.-

fastest way
i'm at 83.8.
73-79: Kari Arrow head. wind + iron ingot + tama-hagen = 6. Material + any failure = ~8K per syn. stack of 12 sells top NPC for 2K, or on AH for 8K (but sells very slowly). So 4-7K loss per syn.
75-81: Darksteel gorget. Fire + darksteel sheet + ram leather = 1. Material + failure = 12K per syn. Sell to NPC for 3666 gil a piece.
77-83: Darksteel nodawa. Earth + darksteel sheet + silk thread = 1. Material + failure = 11.5 K per syn. Sell to NPC for 3000 gil. Ten-shodo goes for 3300-4500.
Problem w/ darksteel nodawa is that Ten-shodo only takes something like 18-24 of them a day. And even if you just sell one, the price sinks to 3300 for MANY REAL LIFE DAYS. So when the price is stuck at 3300, there is no advantage to syn this instead of DS gorget. Infact if you want to do many, more than Ten-shodo would buy at once, it's probably better to syn D.S gorget. Kari-arrow head is the cheapest way to go, but it only takes you to 79, and require a trip to Norg to get the best deal on Tama-hagen (sells for 4.5K a piece there).
Don't really bother with the other stuff like bastard sword or D.S scythe unless you enjoy waiting for many many weeks for stuff to sell over AH, as they don't even sell 1 a day, while you make 40-50 just to gain a level. Or worse yet, pay the significant Jeuno AH fee and end up having it not sell because the other smiths undercut.
83-87 is extremely painful. I spent 1.7 million in material to do 48 celeta syn. Full moon fires day, only got 0.8 skill up. Sold celetas to NPC for ~300K back. 1.4 million loss for 0.8 gain. If I was to sell 40 celeta over the AH, it will take AGES! Not to mention that celeta price is only 15K now because of other smiths. So not much better than avoiding the AH fee and selling to NPC for 8.5K a piece.
Right now, I'm basically doing: takes about 1 week to save up 1.7 million to get 4 stacks of material. Do them all on the best day, and unload them all to NPC, and just try and move on. Hoping to gain 1 level per week this way. So I should hit 87 in a month.
Time is money. The longer you are stuck at a level, the higher the opportunity cost. Check your server to see if it's worth slowing your leveling to a craw for things to sell over the AH.
Oh, and 87-93: Death scythe. 30K loss per syn. Say 50 syn per level, so 1.5 mil per level. Much better than adman, and you don't risk losing 500K in a single faiure.
93-95. Bhuj. 50K loss per syn. So 2.5 mil loss. But hey, you are look at the "leet" levels here. You are already among the best if you can get to here.
95-100. Various Adman based gear, Relic steel maybe, culverine, tabazine. ect. There is nothing that doesn't involve adman ingot/sheet/chain at these levels (except the relic steel), so you really can't power level the last 5 levels without losing 20+ million a level at 500K loss per syn. LOL.

im currently a 82.0 smith heres what I did on ragnarok server
all materials as cheaply obtained as possible
73-74 Kabutowari: 20-25k on AH
darksteel ingot - 8000g
tama-hagane - 5250g
elm lumber - 2000-2500g
copper ingot - 300g
cotton thread - 300g
raptor skin -1000g
74-77 Holy Breastplate: 40k at AH
3x blessed mythril sheet - 18000g
darksteel sheet - 8200g
sheep leather - 700g
2x ram leather - 2000g
silver ingot - 1700g
77-83 Darksteel Nodowa: 3900-4500 to guild
darksteel sheet - 8200g
silk thread - 700g
77-83 thick sollerets: 30k at AH
darksteel sollerets - 21400g
steelsheet - 5000g
heres what I plan to do:
83-87 Celata: 40k to AH
around break even
83-86 thick breeches: 45k to AH
around break even
86-89 hellfire: 30k to AH
10k loss a synth
89-90 generals shield
profitable
90-92 misericorde
slight loss unless adaman failure (ouch)
90-97 wootz ingot
wtf do you sell this? dunno
97-100 culverin
break even
I have a mule and my main account selling goods I make every day, its not really that slow skilling up since I only craft on certain days of the full moon. crafting is only as expensive as you want it to be. I personally dont like selling to npc.
Edit: I did make alot of darksteel nodowas and other random stuff but that was after I made a divine breastplate ^^

leathercraft 43
goldsmith 45
alchemy 57
wood 60
cloth 53
EDIT: the strange thing when using materials of other crafts is that thier lvl reqs are significantly lowered when applied to smithing. for example I was suprised to be able to use tiger leather just fine even with 43 leathercraft. while even with 44~ goldsmith I was failing on darksteel gauntlets which require a gold ingot. 19 lvl difference vs 10 lvls go figure. the good thing about this is that you can potentially get dual skill ups which is extremely nice if both skills are post 50. I cant wait to do general shields when I get my goldsmith up a little more. the platinum sheets have a lvl 56 requirement for that synth, the perfect bridge from 54-56 goldsmith. by the way, does anyone know what lvl requirement the gold ingot has in smithing? I mean I was synthing the gauntlets at lvl 82 smithing and a failed a couple with skill ups in goldsmith. was it just bad luck or what?

Subcraft lvls varies depending on the synth. It's not dependant on the material used from the other craft. I use to think that the lvl needed for a subcraft is the same as the capped lvl for that material, however I was mistaken. For example, Adaman Cuisses which uses gold ingots, stop giving skillups in goldsmithing at 54. However, if you synth Adaman Gauntlets or Cuirass (which also uses gold ingots) you can get skillup in goldsmithing all the way to 60 (yes, first hand experience). For expensive synths that involve platinum or adaman, I would suggest you to lvl your goldsmithing to 60 first through cheaper goldsmithing recipes, rather than hope for a double skillup. One full material loss break in recipes which cost 500k+ is not worth the 0.1-0.2 skillup you might get in goldsmithing.75DRK/75BRD/42WHM/40WAR/40THF/40BLM/37NIN/30BST/24SAM/15MNK

I just had a similar experience the day before. I cracked like 7 times trying to sign myself a hellfire before getting a success, where as I was synthing darksteel gauntlets with about a 1/2 success rate. my guess is that the requirement on the material gets closer and closer to the actual requirement in subcraft as the lvl of the smithing synth increases.
EDIT: I am now a 84+2 smith not including imagery on top of that so it wasnt really my smithing skill causing the failures
