Getting ww to 80 costs about 500k or so. However it depends on server. If you do demon arrows instead of break clothespoles on the boat, you'll have to dish out alot more gil. >.< I took the path of doing arrows early on mostly, as they are pretty cheap and since you can turn them into quivers, you can store alot till they sell. I dont remember exactly what I made but some arrows sell really well. Although I remember at 60+ or so it starts to get hard and cost more.

Woodworking to 59 is extremely easy; however, skillups slow down past 50 in all skills, and post 59 woodworking is relatively painful to skill up. The pain will be less if you are a fisherman, but for people like myself, who can't stand normal fishing, let alone fishing while failing on purpose, then wasting tons of gil on light crystals, it's really not a tempting option.
You ~can~ make money in woodworking at any level, though not much. Woodworking is not really a profitable guild :/ and there are already A LOT of woodworkers on most servers already (rangers and fishermen+ everyone else who wants to give it a go) If it's money you're after, take up another craft.

Edit: Skilling up on those fishing poles will cost you about 20K per level minimum on almost any server, which is a lot of what you do post 69, then if you'd like you can factor in how much TIME it takes you to break those poles, and you'll see that a lot goes into it. Skills like smithing, for example, may be more expensive all around, but you can usually find a craft that will amount you to a decent return on synths, if not even turn a profit (I profited on at least 1/2 of my smithing skillup levels [lvl 60 smithing].)
Demon arrows are also far more expensive to make yourself than to buy at AH unless you make your own Demon Arrowheads, which cap at 63 bonecrafting ;_; You won't lose much money at all going to 59, but I'm going to agree that 500K is about what you can expect to spend on 59-80, and failures considered you might lose quite a bit more.

        I dunno...

My Woodworking is stuck @ Lv.21, due to the fact that I can NEVER find Iron arrowheads in stock. But going from Lv.10 to Lv.20 was very simple, and didn't cost me much at all.

As soon as I could start making Crossbow bolts, I found people who flew through them. I farmed the crystals, they bought the items. I made the bolts, and gave them to them. Didn't actually cost me anything until I was Woodworking Lv.16 I think. Then I farmed Thunder Elementals and made Maple Sugar to Lv.21.

I've found that Cooking is "cheap." Making Juice for leveling almost the entire way to Lv.50. But with farming, I could make a profit from Cooking in the 20's I believe. (Making Boiled Crab) Now I grow most of the items for Meat Mithkabobs, and farm Cockatrice meat for gil. 3k+ a stack, and it only cost me 54-254g for Kazham Peppers, and sometimes crystals.

Personally I find any sort of smithing annoying. Holding all that ore for one synth. I try and find recipes with stacking items, or the fewest items to level on. I'm leveling Clothcraft now, and it's not cheap. 30k a stack for Linen Cloth on Lakshmi. It was recommended I make Soil Hachimaki from Lv.22-30. (Wind + Linen Clothx2) 30k for 6 hachimakis that sell for 3k each. That's a lot of lost gil there. Even with my gil made from Cooking, that hurts.

Well that's part of your problem right there From 21 you should be making silver arrows to 30. Very easy synth and you shouldn't have many failures with adv imagery. In any case, I don't normally consider material availability to factor into the difficulty of raising a craft unless it were something truly rare, like leveling off of rare drops. Personally, I bypassed the whole problem by making my own silver arrowheads, from ~20? to 27 goldsmithing and I had a major excess in stock. At the time I began crafting them there were 20+ stacks in the Sandy AH, but they all sold out by the time I had finished with silver arrows, and I managed to find plenty of people desperate enough to pay a higher price for them :D

Availability is generally much more random than cost effectiveness in synthing. If you are going to have a hard time getting the materials, you can always farm or synth your own-- if not, just horde them, buying whatever you can when it's available, and check frequently.
