joining a guild

I've been playing a while and am trying to join the Blacksmith's guild. I went to the Ironworks in Bastok and talked to a Galka and he was talking about the guild and told me to make a Bronze Dagger. I made one and talked to him and nothing about me joining the guild was mentioned. Is that it and I'm already in the guild or what? Also, how do I advance my rank in the guild if I'm in? Some lady in the Ironworks mentioned Guild Points or something and said I can't do anything until I'm an Amateur or something to that effect. Thanks.
