What level does your Blacksmith skill need to be before you make a profit?
far from level 1 and 1/2. you will never make money by raising your skill. at a high level though, once you are able to HQ crafts, you will start to make money.
Genaki 1+2- Done
AF 1+2+4+5- Done
QUIT as of April 2004
HQ = High Quality. Meaning those items that have +1 on the end, or other items that have "white" borders around the image.
Profits in Smithing are only made with high lvl skill, or if you are lucky enough to make HQ items (as said above). However, profit making in smithing is also from desynthing. You will find you're self going through endless amounts of Lightning Crystals because of it.
Desynthing "Beastmen" items (gobbie helms/mails. Antican Pauldrens, quadav backplates/helms) will get you the gil you need fairly fast. You will have higher chances of getting HQ1/HQ2/HQ3 desynths. Selling these items will get you the profit you need, seeing as how the Beastmen item is far less than the profit of say a HQ3 item.
Buy an item for 1000gil, make Darksteel Ingot, sell for 10000gil. Rinse and repeat .
Of course you need skill to get to the "desynthing" lvls in the first place. You can start Desynthing Goblin Helms at lvl 15 Smithing.
Goblin Helms will give 1x Bronze Ingot / HQ1: Iron Ingot / HQ2: Steel Ingot.
When you are desynthing these for the first time, SAVE you're Iron Ingots, if you are still planning on lvling smithing. Sell any Steel Ingots you get. They should sell fast. Midgardsormr price is about 4.5-5k each. And Gobbie Helm prices are 500-1000gil each.
You will actually like it when you get to desynthing Antican Pauldrens, get stack of Darksteel and sell for about 110k gil a stack. But that's around lvl 60 smithing.
On a side note, you WILL lose a lot of gil lvling smithing. And when skilling smithing at the "Iron" stage (should be lvl 20-30/35) NEVER use Steel ingots as an ingredient. Steel is hard on the wallet that early, and the only way you can get one without buying is from desynthing.
