  • Macro Use in FFXI

If an infinite number of monkeys all sat down and fished in FFXI, one monkey would catch a fish every single cast and get a skill raise every single catch while one monkey would never catch a single fish and never get a single skill gain. This is an unarguable mathematical fact. What an unlucky monkey.

I am that unlucky monkey. After 4 hours fishing using the same bait and rod as everyone else on the pier I have not gotten a SINGLE skill gain. Yes I have caught some fish so I am not a complete anomaly but not a single skill gain.

Looking at fishing in other games, the design in FFXI really tests your patience. It’s like those sand gardens you’re supposed to comb with no real goal except to spend time and relax. Well I tell you at this point I am far from relaxed.

I know many of my fellow fishers are fishing bots. This got me thinking is using a Macro SO bad for the game?

After a quick search on Ebay for FFXI Macro I found a fishing macro program for sale that I think I just may buy.

Let us examine exactly what effect macro users have on this game.

I have heard arguments that people who macro ruin the economy; this is simply not true for reasons I will discuss later. I have also heard arguments that those that use macro’s deflate the price of fish, this is certainly true, However how many fish can you really catch before you go completely out of your mind without using a macro program? Probably not many, so your either loosing money on only a couple of auctions or your should get a macro program like everyone else. Don’t kid yourself, the Japanese people are not ignoring you because they can’t understand you, they are all using macros!

The main argument against macro fishing is that it gives those who fish an unfair advantage over those who do not, because it allows those people to buy equipment that took the legitimate player a much longer time to get. They also drive up auction house prices by paying higher fees having a larger bankroll.

I have to admit, fishing aside, FFXI has an amazingly good economic model that works off supply and demand. When item prices increase they increase across the board, so players will be able to sell their items to the macro users much faster and for much higher amounts.

In the end if I did give up fishing I would be much happier to be able to sell my items faster which is much more important then a lower rate of inflation. Since I can only have 7 items in the auction at any time, I am very happy to have the macro users buying my items the next day.

I have also been in many parties with people who obviously have gear that they should not be able to afford at their level, however they were all great people and made my experience raise incredibly fast. Honestly if it was not for the fast leveling I sometimes get when grouped with these people I may have become bored of FFXI by now and moved on to some other game.

So in the end while using a macro program is bad and evil it does help keep people interested in the game, and it does not negatively affect the economy in a large way.

I am still unsure if I will buy that macro program but I can tell you if I do I certainly wont have any guilt over it.

    macro program = scam

You will end up losing alot of money, your account will be banned from ffxi, and we will all laugh at you.

    please dont do it.

anything that looks too good to be true...guess what? it really isnt true.

so get a good book, and keep hitting alt +1

Or just stop fishing. Ive been playing this game for many many months and ive never equipped a fishing rod.

Isn't there the issue of you being able to do it and a PS2 player not being able to? Unfair advantage? Anyway, fishing is about patience. If you program it, you'll end up in detention.

*side note: are those white rooms (aka matrix training program) people had pics of the GM detention areas or was that the thing when you zoned to expansion in beta and you didn't have it?

The more botters there are, the more us regular fishers get screwed with these crazy anti-bot precausions. ._.

well, I know there are plenty of bots out there

And since I don't fish (farming make far more money than fishing), it doesn't bother me at all to see those bots standing there fishing day in and day out.

But honestly, as a non-fisher, I actually like the bots. I'm a cook. I need fish to cook with. No fish = no cooking. No cooking = no skilling up and no money. And if you are a Paladin, you would want me to be able to sell sea food product cheap as well. So I don't care how the catch the fish, as long as they catch them, and put them up on the AH so I can get some.

I would be perfectly ok if everyone bots. I'm serious. Cheaper fish = cheaper and faster skilling up for me. There is the old saying: "if you can't beat them...."

as for PS2 players can't get bots, that's not true. Those JP players are playing on PS2 (mostly), they are botting, so there must be a way.
