I'm currently making a small profit with goldsmithing at 11. However, in doing so, I can only make a small number of items a RL day (read: little skill gain) to prevent the market from being flooded, so I can continue to make a profit.
There's only a few things I see that are profitable, until I'm able to make HQ synths or items used in certain quests (ie. gobbiebag #1, the 2nd quest from Bastok's Elvaan Goldsmith, etc.). Beyond that, most of the high level synths (40+) require either blacksmithing or clothcraft (or both!).
Any craft skill can be profitable at any level if you aren't buying any of your supplies.Newbie: Where's a good place to go when you're new?
Me: It's called "outside of town"
