  • Fishing skill-up question

Hey all, just got a quick question for you. I'm currently at skill 11 fishing. I'm mainly based out of windurst, But not afraid to travel a little. I'm wondering what to catch next to gain skill and also hopefully not loose more money then I make. I fished Moat carp from 5-11 and came out with a nice set of fishing clothes and a couple decent rods. I tried pipira in windurst but that's still to high skill. I cought like 1 in a hour or so. thanks in advance guys!

Fishing skill is all about going to the right places at the right times and going for the right kind of fish. 5-11 is fine obviously for a start but after that, it gets a little bit more tricky. The aim is to isolate the fish that will get your skill to the next level and to disregard actually making a huge amount of profit (not sure you can beat 4k for a stack of moat carp for a while now heh)

As far as the next fishing location for you goes, you need to find a fish (or couple of fish) in a certain area that are suitably above your level and can be isolated (using a certain bait).

For me, I've been raising my fishing skill in East Ronfuare in the Cheval River fishing for obviously Cheval Salmon (also serves as the next skill ranking raise) and also the odd Shining Trout (Can synth or just sell for about 50 gil a piece) using a Carbon Rod (won't break and you won't get the 'fish was too small message') and a Fly Lure (both fish bite this lure and minnow as well. I've had better results from a 250gil (at AH) fly lure than minnow) and my fishing skill in the last 2 days has gone from 12 to 18 (fishing about 1.5-2 hours a day). My best bite/hit ratio has been Waxing and Waning at around 20%-25%ish, didn't get an extreme number of bites during New Moon and have yet to try Full Moon (I'll be at work during the next one -_-)p

Now, you may say 'how do you know this when your fishing skill only went from 12-18 in the last 2 days?' well, even though my fishing skill only shows I'm a veritable noob, I've really been fishing for about 1.5 months but completely fishing for the wrong thing. I was into fishing for money rather than fishing smart (moat carp, even spent a few days on the mhaura->selbina boat for some gugru tuna and nebimonite) and it's taken me a loooooong time and alot of research to figure out the things I've just told you now (I'm a little slow on the uptake).

As for post Cheval Salmon (ie: lvl 20+) fishing, it's best to go for fish that you can isolate easily (I like lure fishing personally for skilling up and bait fishing when I'm trying to make some money) and fish that are 5-10 levels above your fishing skill. Pipira in Windurst are good using a Minnow lure or meatballs if you're game.

Hope you get some good results

Heh, I feel like I've been fishing for months, and my skill is only 4 (bastore sardines in Port Windurst, with FW fishing rod and sabiki). Any tips for these early levels?

Wow, thanks for th every good post. I wanted to fish the salmon but i actually have no clue how to get to that place yet. I do have choco and can travel. I'll ask some people in-game for directions. Unless you happen to see this and maybe someone can help me out with some directions. Thanks guys!

Deedlit, my suggestion to you is to fish for Yellow Globes. These sell well and can be caught with the sabiki rig so you get up to 3 at a time. They raise your skill very well early on. I'm lvl 12 fishing and still getting skill from them. I have had the most luck catching them in Mhaura.

Cheval salmon can be caught in East Ronf, right outside the San D'oria castle..

I've caught them with minnor and fly lure.. In my experience, minnow caught salmon more, and fly lure caught shining trout more. Btw, shining trout is around lvl 35 fish or so i believe..

anyways, go with both lures and have fun

I'm now fishing 19, and moving away from east ronf. I'm going to try to fish nemobites from the boat, or jugner forest lake for carps.. (this one is more for money making, as i heard you can catch rusty caps there as well - this sells for around 3k i believe).

Use trout paste to catch cheval salmon/shining trout in either ronfaure or jugner. You'll get more skillups with real bait.
