  • Am I good enough to catch Pipira?

I'm at level 19 in fishing and I have +4 fishing from my clothes. As someone suggested to me, I started trying to catch Pipira in Windurst Waters with my Mithran rod with either meatballs or my minnow lure. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to catch any Pipira

Am I using the wrong rod/bait combination? Am I trying to catch the Pipira in the wrong area, or am I just not at the required level of skill yet? If I'm not good enough yet, what should I try to catch in the meantime?

Hmmm, 59 views and no response... Should I take it that noone has been able to fish for Pipira consistently?

I went fishing yesterday in Windurst walls during the fullmoon and I was able to catch 4 Pipira with meatballs as bait. This was in about 45 minutes of casting. The rest of the time, I got a few "You lost your catch", but alot of "You did not catch anything". On the other hand, when I swithed to insect balls, I caught 3 stacks of Moat Carp in an hour.

Maybe I should just keep fishing for Cheval Salmon for a few more levels... It's slow though

I tried fishing for pipira there with similar results at 20skill, so it isn't just you. I was pissed too, I expected to be able to get to 30 there...I got a skill up, but it was still very slow and very boring.

Kinda turned out to be a good thing, since I found another spot I like. Fishing in battillia downs for tiger cod. Very dangerous, but also pull up nosteau herrings and skill ups are fast. Good catch rate also.

Be warned however, the enemies in the area are tough and I pulled up a Very Tough crab(fishing monster) as a level 25. Gonna go level up a bit and come back, best spot I found.

Although, you might try your luck fishing in jeuno. I read a guide that said you could get tiger cod there, but I got no bites of any kind(maybe wrong spot?).

Yeah, the Pipiras are kinda hard to catch in the early 20's. When I got to lvl 20 + 4(gear), I tried to see if I could get some skill and make some money catching Pipira, but the catch rate wasn't very good, even on the full and new moons. I switched to a glass fiber rod, and though I wasn't getting the occasional "rod too big" message I got with my Mithran, caught more Pipira and gained more skill that way, my rod broke more often than I would've liked. Add the fact that Pipira doesn't sell nearly as fast as Moat Carp on my server and I pretty much decided to look for other options.

I went back to Bastok and tried fishing for Giant Catfish in the water reservoir in Bastok Markets, using my Mithran Rod and Sinking Minnow. I tried on the Wanning Gibbous and caught more Catfish than I could handle! I did this all the way till lvl 30 and I'm still smiling about it. At the AH, Catfish doesn't seem to bring in as much $ as Moat Carp or Pipira (unless there's a mission somewhere that gives you 500Gil for each er somethin'), but I can still sell them at the fishing guild for 200+gil each. My only gripe is that they are not stackable.

As for Tiger Cod, you can definately fish for those in a safer place then Batalia downs! Dayum, you live dangerously!
If you have your Khazam pass (which you should at lvl25), go to Port Jeuno and go to the waiting area for the ship to Khazam. You'll have to pay a 200 Gil fee for passage to that area, but it's well worth the skill you'll get catching Tiger cod and Nosteau Herring. Just make sure to bring plenty of bait and you'll be fine. You'll also get Yellow Globe, but that is skill-capped at 17. Heck, it's still money in your pocket

          Little update on my end.

I tried that spot you mentioned for tiger cod, but frankly it sucks. you still only get bites like 1/4. Bad, imo.

Battillia was very fast as a level 1 job, but there's a better spot pre-27 fishing. Just head to north sandoria with insect balls and get tricolorcarps until 27. Good skill ups and I'm making tons of gil with the moats I get.

About catfish, can't you only get them at night?

I might try that soon, but I was planningo n getting to 27, then back to battillia for 28 or 29(die fairly often but skill ups are very very fast, so it makes up for it). Then, ogre eels at W Saratabuta, which are good to 34.

I fished Tiger Cod for 2 levels in two days. Might have had something to do with the time I chose to fish, but I don't remember the details. The bite rate was average, but at least it was safe. I also remember catching a few Black Soles there too, which were worth good Gil. At 26, if I remember correctly, I moved to the Mhaura/Selbina boat and caught Nebimonites till I capped at 30. The cool thing about nebs is that they sell for 11K+ per stack, so you get to skill up and make tons of Gil at the same time. Even now at lvl 41, I still make a stop at the boat once in a while to catch a few stacks of those.

            JR.

P.S. I think you can catch Catfish during daytime too...

What'd you use for the nebs on the boat? I've yet to find any sort of combo for boat fishing that didn't result in having a pile of kindling at the end of the trip. :\

Composite rod + Crayfish paste balls = no breaks + less catches
Carbon rod + Crayfish paste balls = possible (but rare) break + more catches.

                  carbon on the boat? yikes!

I lost 2 carbons on the boat with less than 6 combined casts.

Ever since the last patch I've been catching a crap load of rusty items on the ship. I lost 2 Carbons on one trip. Looks like it'll be safer from now on to stick to Comp. Gonna loose a few nebs, but it's better than loosing Carbons, at least until I can fix them myself.

What is the reccomended level for catching Tiger Cod or Catfish? I'm at 15 right now with the +4 from the fishing gear. I've been fishing in the Cheval River for the past week, but my skillup is few and far between. I've been there for the past week, and only gotten 2 levels off of many hours of fishing. I fished for something like an hour pulling in 1.5 stacks of Cheval Salmon and .5 stacks of Shining Trout and I only got .3 skillup.

That happens sometimes. Fishing skills up slowly in general. Even slower with lure. If you want to go a little faster, use bait.

Personally, I'd fish for cheval salmon until 21, then go for tri-color carp to 27(good money).

27-29 can be done by fishing tiger codin battillia downs(sardine ball). Just make sure you're atleast level 33, and you'll still have to run from krakens. However, if you fish in the right spot, you can run into eldime necropolis.

29-31 can be done easily with catfish. Online guides might tell you that minnow works for them, but it isn't true... Try using either frog lure, sinking minnow lure, or trout balls.

That should keep you busy for a while

Another good place to catch tiger cod and herring is in the middle of the frozen lake in Qufim. There's no danger of fishing up monsters there and aside from an occasional banshee at night getting close, it is relatively safe. The best part, is you will only catch those two fish there instead of the junk fish you'd get in Port Jeuno. Great way to pass the time waiting for a party in Qufim.

Oh, and a little tip. Don't sell your cod on AH. If your cooking skill is around 10, use wind crystal and cod to make 6 sliced cod. A stack of sliced cod can sell for about 750 gil at the fishing guild. So in essence, 1 stack of cod turns into 6 stacks of sliced cod, for 4500 instant gil. It helps to have a mule in Windurst for this.

My fishing skill has been stuck at 35 for like a week now and I cant figure out where I need to go next...

Im level 50 (WHM) so I can fish in most places without danger but I just cant find any good spots or if i do, I dont skill up at all.

                            any suggestions?

I started fishing Pipira when I was level 17 + clothes. They do take longer than other fish. I certainly didn't catch as much Pipira as I was catching Salmon and Trout. But you can turn Salmon or Trout into Roast Pipira, which is a monster money maker.

You need more patience to fish Pipira. What I do is fire up my laptop and play some other game while I fish. Helps to pass the time...
