  • Question about alchemy

    Hi
I have gotten my alchemy skill to level 6, and I was just wondering if its worth it to keep going. I want to switch to weaving (for the JSE because i am a black mage). Does alchemy get you more money later on? Or is weaving better?

Also, does alchemy make JSE equipment?

If you expect to make gil as a level 6 alchimist, you're outta luck. With all guilds, you lose money at early levels. You need to invest time, gil, and effort to level guilding skills past the painful early start. However, once your guild skill is 20 or 25, you can start to make money. Real mony starts flowing when your guild skill gets much higher. I think the current cap is lv 100 (don't expect to reach this level until you have played a year or so).

A very experienced player named Drako once told me that you should have at least 100k gil to invest when starting a guild. This is probably unreasonable for new starting players, but you should expect to invest at least 50k before you really make money through the guild. Done gradually (i.e. 2.5k gil for each guild skill level), this is much easier to achieve.

I guess it depends on what you consider "losing money". For instance, fire crystals sell for 1700-2200 per 12. You get the choice of making gil by selling the crystals or taking the crystals and crafting with them. Early on, crystals will be the most "expensive" resource in crafting.

Since I've had great success getting 18 fire crystals per flower pot every 4 days, I figure I could have 180 crystals if I planted 10 pots (or 360 if my partner also plants). Initial investment for the pots is 950-1050 each, but last forever (at 9 goldsmithing, you can make your own brass pots...). Since I'm doing goldsmithing, the only money I'm actually spending for skill gain is on the copper ore, which only costs 9-20 gil each. I've been leveling off of worms, which occasionally drop zinc (350 from the npc; only occasionaly available). Now, I have ~7.5 goldsmithing with very minimal investment.

Later on, once I get the hang of growing semi-precious rocks (one seed + 1 crystal per rock... or 2500+ per unpolished rock from the NPC), I'll be able to polish them for skill starting at 11 (and later use for ring making). Or better yet, upgrade cheap AH bronze armor and resell the upgraded version like suggested in another thread. Again, very minimal investment.

If you buy all of your supplies, you will go flat broke crafting. I'd say I've invested more gil in weaving than I have in goldsmithing (and goldsmithing is considered the most expensive guild!). Of course, that's purely a locational issue, since I'm Bastokan and worm mobs are everywhere and drop zinc 30% of the time (and silver 5-10% of the time). While grass, cotton, and other weaving supplies are exceptionally rare...
Newbie: Where's a good place to go when you're new?
Me: It's called "outside of town"

interesting. I gotta start planting then, sounds like a nice way to get resources.

Cymmina can you explain more about growing "rocks" please? what do you do, and what's the product you get?

If you don't mind gathering materials, Beeswax sells pretty well even if you have to buy the fire crystals and distilled water. If you buy the beehive chips as well though, you're screwed ><
Formula is 3 beehive chips + 1 distilled water synthed with a Fire Crystal. And they go for 500-700 each I think. I think it's actually the skill level 11-20 stages that are expensive. At least it was for Leatherworking.
          Craft skills:
          Leathercraft: 91+1
          Smithing: 54
          Weaving: 60
          Alchemy: 60
          Bonecraft: 39
          Woodworking: 47
          Cooking: 41
          Goldsmithing: 53
          Fishing: 55

Another good way to get resources is level up your fishing skill... and be a mage *wink*

Right now I am fishing in Qufim catching 2~3 Yellow Globes at a time and extracting the poison from them for leveling up alchemy... Run out of lightning crystals? No biggie I just whack a Thunder Elemental (Elementals = mage food) for 12 or 24 more crystals and repeat.

I've only done this for about 4 hours and I already have 2 stacks of poison dusts (which I will make into poison potions later). This means I've caught 48 fish XD and I only have Fishing Skill 9+4 so it's not too slow of a process. If you plan on doing this make sure you get composite rod/sabiki rig (10k G and 2k G) to insure you hardly ever break (at least I haven't yet) ^_^
