I actualy started with a Glass Rod as I would rather put in the initial investestemt than keep buying cheeper rods. I've been raising my level slowly and I'm not to about 4. A wonderful Japanise friend of mine who has been using fishing as a main source of income recently gve me a Mithran Rishing Rod...Can't really evene use it yet.. the rish are all too big for me. BUt the one thing that he assured me is that your skill improoves as a result of the number of casts rather than fish caught. Hence I have uses pretty much only worms and insect balls and gone for freshwater.
Another thing to consider is whne you are fishing. You cna catch fish at any time but you really need to look at the time of day (dawn and dusk) and phase of the moon (new and full) for the best times to land your catch.

The only way to get past lvl 10 is to go to the fishers guild in Windurst and give the guildmaster a Moat Carp. Though Selbina does have a fishers guild, they do not have a guildmaster.

It takes ALOT of time, I'm only at lvl 7 and I'd say I have 12+ hours of fishing at least.

I've been using a Bamboo Rod w/ Insect bait in Fresh Water. With that combo the only fish you should be pulling up are Moat Carp which sell for 4k a stack. You can fish either Salt or Fresh, but like I said before moat carp sell for ALOT more then the Quus and Sardines.

Wind Crystals are quite expensive though .

I'm currently broke because I bought a Mithran Rod from the AH in windhurst ... Not been having a lot of luck with it recently. I was only able to get half a stack of Moat Carp using 4 insect balls...

                  ...

How do you get 6 Moat Carp with only 4 Insect Balls? From all of my fishing I've only caught 1 fish per insect ball. I know with the Saibiki Rig you can catch up to 3 though.

What server are you on where you can sell moat carp for 4k a stack? I've seen 2.9 - 3k in Sany on Midgarsrmor (sp) and about 2 - 2.4k in Bastok. Are there just too many fishers on my server driving the price down?

On Odin server moat carp goes for 4 k a stack.

I average nearly 12 moat carp, one stack, per 24 insect balls.
I'm at 13 fishing skill now, having gained some past the 11 moat carp cap on giant catfish and pipira. Quus would be good for gaining, but unfortunately the stupid bastore sardine is caught by the same bait.

Hmmm... Can we still catch Quus with Mithran + Sabiki Rig ? Cause last night I was doing it, got 4-5 stacks of Bastore Sardines without getting a single Quu... The bastore sardines are a good snack during battles !

i've caught quus and kelp and sardines using mithran fish. rod and sabiki rig from lvl 0 to lvl 8 so far.

then i bought a few worms and caught a moat carb for my test at the fishing guild

They sucky thing is nothing isolates quus. So the bait you use for quus will also catch sardines. So most of your catches will be sardines.

I think now I need to go to selbina to try to catch greedie, with a worm lure since that will isolate them. They cap at 14 skill and I have 13 skill now.

Quus are 19 skill cap but I never seem to catch the dang things so can't skill up very well in the port.

I've been using a minnow lure or meatballs in the windurst other zones, for pipira. They cap at 29, though, so I'm not getting many bites from them yet. I have gained some skillups and you don't catch anything else with those baits.

Sinking minnow just outside of the port zone, in west sarubata a lil to the north east (that lil moat along the right side of the zone), will catch giant catfish and dark bass. These cap at 31 and 33 skill, respectively. I hardly catch them but do gain some skillups that way. Stupid giant catfish does not stack, but fetches over 200 gil at an NPC vendor (was 400 at auction, but I never sold one.)

                                I want fish database

Around full moon and new moon seem great for fishing moat carps. When the moon is far from those phases, it's not worth getting so few fish.

I'm level 30.8 fishercat and bought emperor hairpin and supplies to get a non-cheap ninja to 24 with moat carp money. My journal has recordings of my fishing adventures, but is highly offensive to minorities and people who don't level subjobs.
                                Warning level cat face.
