Is there a way to auto-subscribe to a thread without getting an email about it?

Maybe I'm missing something, but it looks to me like the only way to auto-subscribe to a thread is to have the "email notification" box checked. I've been on other vB boards where this isn't the case, and it's a lot more convenient. Thanks.
