  • Gamecube was 3D-capable o.O

    http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interv...o-3ds-made/0/0

The latest Iwata Asks got translated over at nintendo.com. It has some really interesting discussion regarding Nintendo's history of experimenting with 3D tech. From the NES to present-day, they've always have been wanting to put on a 3D-capable system. They speak candidly about their original effort with Virtual Boy and why that didn't work out.

Miyamoto and Iwata make mention of the Gamecube actually being 3D-capable. There there was meant to be a peripheral that activated the circuitry within for that feature, but the type of LCD display needed to realize its potential was not ready for the mainstream consumer. Yep, every Gamecube ever has had this potential built in. I doubt that's the case for the Wii, but its starting to sound like where they want to go with the next console.

Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi takes part in the interview and seems to have his mind blown most of the discussion. He's not clueless or paid to be amazed, its just he has other jobs besides the work he does with Nintendo, so he can't know everything going on with Nintendo.

Also, from the sounds of it in the interview, it seems as though the next Pikmin game has jumped to 3DS.
