Dak are we playing the same game here? Switching to Commando and beating the snot out of the Eidolons still builds thier gestalt gauge so you have something to build it with when they go into tanking mode. With Shiva you beat on Nyx when she's in sentinel mode then switch to the Sentinel class and spam the hell out of your tank skills. Rinse and repeat.

If Class changing mid-fight is so difficult for you to grasp then you're going to love trying to beat Odin since it's impossible to fill his gauge via healing Hope alone

Actually the hints are worded very clearly. You get libra early on, cast it twice and you will know exactly how to beat the Eidolon. Chaining the Eidolon is just a way to keep it's gestalt gaugerising since you are on a very tight time limit for all of the Eidolon fights.

Except they are wrong, they mention building large combination chains and being in a defensive role. Two things you can't do at the same time. Not to mention neither one actually helps. The only reason I made any progress in my first dozen trials were because I was moving between Commando, because it seemed to make the combination gauge drain more slowly, and the Ravager, to increase the gauge faster than in the Commando role. I just happened to be switching between during a point where doing so would net me points towards winning.

Well from impressions I got from Destructoid and 1Up, there's a particular class that helps push the enemy to Break status before you can really unleash powerful combo attacks and its best to have your two allies using that job during a non-defensive turn to wear the enemy down to the point of reaching Break status.

Keep in mind that FF games do tend to have a lot of bosses that are PITA in the way they were probably intended to be fought (or at least, the manly way), and easy as fuck otherwise. See phoenix down to kill Zombie Evrae, Reflect on Spectral Keeper (annoying laser beam dragon), pretty much any given HNM in 'XI.

The point of most fights, by my understanding, its to shift jobs to that you can eventually push the enemy to Break status with Blasters (dunno if they changed the name in the english version) and then you go on a melee offensive.
They must have changed the name, and I might be getting it wrong too. For most fights you're attempting to chain attacks together to fill the enemy's combo gauge in order to stagger it. While staggered they take additional damage. Eidolons are different in that they can't be killed and require you to meet certain conditions. They also cast Doom on you and give you what feels like about a minute to complete their challenge. Before fighting the first Eidolon you face they give you a few hints, and using Libra gives you more hints, and they were all wrong.

Fuck. Why did the game suddenly have to become so fucking aggravating? There really weren't any challenges up until this point, which was a shame, but it was a nice pace. Suddenly, they throw this stupid trial and error fight at you and completely mislead you about how to win. Damn.

yeah thats about right, other the leveling your gear, and using CP to learn stuff, you do not really have a "level"

So I just went and picked it up at lunch and read the entire manual. Seems cool. It looks like it you gain abilities and tchniques similar to the way ffxii did, with the skill chart type thingy. Gain points, use the points to unlock new skill in your skill chart, etc. You can also collect items that will let you upgrade your weapons which seems neat. You can upgrade and upgrade and upgrade, then when your weapon is maxed out, you can transform it into a new weapon that can then start getting upgraded. Upgraded weapons have hidden stats that can benefit you / the party. You can also evolve you character. I read it fast at lunch and don't have it now, but it lead me to believe that once you build up a certain amount of points or skills, you can evolve your charcter into something more powerful, gaining new skills, etc... Or something like that. Sounds exciting.

    And grats Dak!

The defensive role doesn't have any fucking offensive abilities that actually fill the fucking combo gauge, so what the fuck am I supposed to do? I don't even get any points for filling the combo gauge, it seems I get the most from stance dancing and auto-attacking. And it's not like the combo gauge is easy to fill when it randomly drops for no reason or the Eidolon decides to juggle me, ruining all the work I put into it.

I'm on my eleventh fucking try with this thing.

Well, then you no longer have a card game. It's now an RPG using card mechanics.

Also, Magic has insane power creep based on what format you are playing, but I'm sure thats a topic for another thread.

Triple Triad and Tetra Master are similar games with three distinct differences.

    - Tetra Master cards have stats
    - Tetra Master cards can level up
    - Because of those two things, Tetra Master is a sucky, unbalanced mess

Triple Triad just as the Othello factor applied to numbered cards and there are much more varied rulesets within FFVIII.

If you lose in TT, you lose fair and square; You lose in Tetra Master on POL, you lost because some guy played longer than you.
